Youth centre
hopes dashed
for awhile

TERRACE LIKELY won’t sce a youth centre open
this winter.

The youth centre development committee had been
looking at renting a house on Park Ave,

But after meeting with city building inspector Paul
Gipps, they’ve determined that renovations will like-
ly cost about $15,000. That*s on top of the $1,000 a

month rent they’d need to come up with,

That might not be so bad, but committee chair Boh
Oliver says the city will only give them a temporary
occupancy permit — until May, 1998.

“It’s not structurally sound enough,”’ says Oliver.
To use the building as a youth centre on a long term
basis, the youth committee would have to do even
more renovations, on top of the $15,000.

The youth committee hasn’t made any decisions
yet, and they’re meeting tonight to decide whal direc-
tion they’d like to go,

Gipps has recommended some other rental build- -

ings to the committee, but Oliver says high rental
costs make many of them impractical.

Another suggestion is that a youth centre could be
operated only a few nights a week, thereby reducing
rental costs,

But Oliver says that would likely be unworkable,
That’s because in order to draw the kids, a youth
centre needs altractions such as a TV, video games, a
foosball table, etc, Putting these items in storage and
then setting them up each time the centre opens could
lake an unreasonable amount of time.

Vehicle
thefts
way up

THE TERRACE ICBC of-
fice is taking action to try
and reduce the high num-
bers of vehicles stolen here.

Vehicle thefts are up over
100 per cent from last year
and ICBC wants to bring a
program popular in the
lower mainland to Terrace.

Called Combat Auto
Theft, the program is for
people who usually don't
drive their vehicles between
1-5 am,

Those are the times that
most vehicles are stolen,
and most are stolen by
young offenders, right out
of the owner’s driveway.

All vehicles are at risk. In-
cluded in the top ten are
trucks, sport cars, family
Sedans, domestics and im-
ports.

A person taking part in the
program places a bright yel-
low sticker on their rear
windshield, If the police see
thal vehicle owt between 1-5
am., theyll stop the car and
investigate.
