She is studying modern
languages at Tomsk teachers’
training college, has an elder
brother and two younger sis-

had won world recognition as

Proof Wanted

A. B. Dalziel, Saanichton,
B.C., writes: Is it pure co-inci-
dence that a chain of earth-
quakes has been set off after
the latest American under-
ground nuclear tests? Had the
Soviet Union conducted those
tests there would have been no
doubt in the western mind that
the tests were to blame for the
death and destruction in Iran.

It would seem to be the re-
sponsibility of Americans to
prove that their testing is not
to blame.

“Technological education is
no longer a matter of instilling
good practice, because good
practice now will certainly not
be good practice in ten years’
time.

“This lag betwen teaching
and experience is now becom-
ing a very serious one and the
detailed study of technology is
being displaced by one of study
of general principles.

“The world of the future will
not be the cold war — divided,
war-preparing world of the pre-
sent,” he said.

“Nor will be it a world with
enormous variations between
the standard of living and the
standard of productivity of the
old industrial and the colonial
or newly-liberated peoples.”

“The computer and its prac-
tical application, automation, is
the biggest discovery of our
time,” said Prof. Bernal. Com-
puters could be used for things
which were never done, or even
thought of, before.

In crystallography the analy-
sis of “fantastically complicated
structures like those of proteins

and nucleic acids’ could not
have been done at all without
computers.

It was time to end “the con-
fusion of unplanned scientific
advance,” he said, calling for a
proper systematic communica-
tions and information service—
automized and using a common
computer language.

Knowledge of the principles
of automation had to become a
regular part of scientific train-
ing for the universities and
technical colleges of the future.

Chemistry was now making
substances to order and “we
may soon be able to match and
excel all biological materials.”

A big problem of today was
to transform an elite education
into mass education. Education
was not now a function of
school years but extended
throughout life.

In this connection Pravda re-
cently stated that almost 6,-
000,000 people in the Soviet

Union now combine their work

with studies, and over 3,000,000

attend evening schools.

The number of such schools
will rapidly rise in the next few
years to fulfil the aim of the
Communist Party program:

Poet Robert Frost has been
doing some space research.

‘T've -been thinking in a
scientific way lately,” the 88-
year-old poet told students at
Middlebury, Eng., College’s
Bread Loaf School of English.

“Someone in Washington
wants me to do something
about glorifying America —
something about the space
age,” Frost said.

“The glory of it,” he added,
‘Gs that we’re making prome-

glorious — and that’s as far
as I go.
