His father was a famed sclentist who coducted early experiments with photo- graphy. Educated in London and Germany, Claudet worked with hig father until 1859 when he was appointed chief asnayer for British Columbia. - 4 4 He was not long at New Weit- minster when Governor James _ Douglas sent him to San Fran- cisco in 1861 to obtain a plant “for a mint.
