Adenauer surrounded by his close associates. Fhe TR. ti By MAX REICH Pacific Tribune Staff Correspondent BERLIN To what an ex- tent the poison of Germanic nationalism in the spirit of Goebbels and Hitler is again paralyzing the West German body, is reflected in what ap- pears to be minor news items, -but is symptomatic of the pres- ent situation. The news items are one day's vintage from the two West Berlin dailies, Der Welt and Der Tagesspiegle of June 10. * = Cd We start with the West Ger- man chanceHor himself. At a Bonn conference of sport reporters, Adenauer de- manded. that no West German team attend any international Eurepean or world sport com- petition if it is held in East Germany. He also. demanded that West German teams should withdraw from any event any- where in the world in which East German teams participate. Adenauer said that he wished Germans today had more na- tional féeling, then added: “German sportsmen are first of all Germans and only in the second place sportsmen, and a time could come when. every German's duty will be to know that he is a German.” Isn’t this the spirit out of wich the Eichmanns grew? * * * Time was- when another chancellor, Hitler, stated the Germans’ duty in very sim- ilar words to those now used by Adenauer. In those days Wily Brandt, candidate for the echancellor’s office in the cur- rent West German elections, Wes a refugee in Norway, and joined a Norwegian unit fight- ing the Nazis. Now Die Welt reports that the leader of the All-German Party, Sehneider, accused Brandt before an election aud- ience of 14.000 that in the hour of need he (Brandt) had conspired against the Father- land and fought the . Nazi troops. “A traitor. remains a traitor,” Schneider concluded. To be an anti-Nazi is to be a traiter to Germany! One day's news | shows how poison of nationalism: is again paralyzing West Germany. True, Adenauer has not said it yet. But the force of logic of necessity moves along the line from Adenauer to Schnei- der. * 4 At the end of February the Vest Berlin Senate published a pamphlet called “Subversive Activities of the East against West Berlin.” Now the anti- Communist Tagesspiegel re- ports that West Berlin Senator Lipschitz thas had to eat hum- ble pie and admit that four of the named ‘subversive’ West Berlin organizations — among them West Berlin’s Unitarian ' West Germany, its demand for Church —-are anti-Communist if anything: In this context light has been shed on how the title ‘‘subver- sive” is earned by an. organ- ization or an individual: Any- one who at any time had any connection. with any © peace movement — as was the case, even though only accidentally, with the four organizations originally named and now “re- habilitated.” : In the tradition of Goebbels, to whom every. opponent of the nazis was a “Commanist”’ and a conspirator against the German nation, the West Ger- man “defenders of democracy” decry as “Communist subvert- ors” anyone who criticizes the stepped-up -militarization of nuclear weapons and its mount- ing provccations. These -‘‘sub- versives” are therefore either penalized er-terrorized into‘in- activity. « * a As under Hitler and Goeb- bels, se today the Communist Party of Germany remains out- lawed, because it is the only effective foree to counteract the enormous pressure of Ger- man monopoly to once again smash every resistance to their wer drive and world mastery The London Daily Express (June 7) estimates that there are several million supporters’ of the Communist Party in West Germany.
