Ron Feicht REMEMBERING GERTA PATSON A special fiend of many West End and False Creek potters, Gerta Kapikova Patson died early in the moming Thursday, January 7. Gerta was born in the German region of Czechoslovakia and worked in the Foreign Office in Prague. During her life she travelled extensively and lived for 15 years in Australia before settling in Canada, Her background included work both as a technician and teacher, Gerta’s under- standing of the arts was broad, encompassing valuable social dimensions; she was one of the founding members of the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and worked to establish the Human Rights Council in Lethbridge. She also launched art and pottery classes for culturally depoved children in Brisbane, Australia. Gerta worked in clay with the ease and grace of a natural. Friends atthe West End Ponery Club and Palse Creek Pottery Club came to know her as an accomplished and prolific potter. Constantly available to others, she shared her vast knowledge and experience. Gerta's work became more known to the public last year when she wits feature artist-of-the-month at the Potters Guild of British Columbia Gallery. In the 1980 Directory of Alberta Potters, she wrote, “My major concern for this world and the future is to leave something that contains a message of my beliefs . .. be ita pot, a tree of some hope; if T can leave something that gives poy to someone then Lam happy too." Gerta’s wonderful energy was present to the end; she hand-built pots in the hospital room and was able to visit home justdavs before cancer finally conquered ber strength, Allofus who became Gerta's friends during her Vancouver years can celebrate her memory and pots. Her engaging radiant smile will stay with ws always.
