Hon. Arthur Meighen in Ottawa on Tuesday eyening last. It is less than a year since the last election, but at that time the people of Canada made such a mess of things that they are be- ing given an opportunity to try again, in hopes that they have decided what they want, and are prepared to give the other fellow an equal chance with themselves to live in decency. With the people of Canada this is nota matter of one party or another getting into office. It is a case of deciding which policy is best for Canada as a growing nation —free trade or low tariffs, or a tariff which will protect all in- dustry in Canada (farming in- cluded) from unfair competition from other countries. Class legislation and group govern- ment have proven a failure and a wonderful waste of time and money. There is no room in federal affairs for sensationalism, Either of the old parties must be given a substantial working ma- jority or the country will remain at a standstill. Hon. Dr. W. H. Sutherland, minister of publie works in B.C., announced upon his return to the south that the main highway would be extended from New Hazelton to Terrace within the next two years. That, at least. is a little more definite than his previous announcement that it would reach Terrace eventually. The Liberal Association of Skeena will meet in convention in Prince Rupert on Saturday to re-nominate Fred Stork. There. could hardly be anyone else go before the convention, unless the present member wished to retire for business reasons, and there has been no word of that. Dugald Donaghy, who repre- sented North Vancouver in the last Dominion parliament, has announced his withdrawal from active politics.- He will be a loss to the Liberals from B.C., as he was the late government's heavy man on the customs investigation committee, ig! For some reason the P.G.E. Railway, reeently ‘‘taken out of politics’, has been unearthed and trotted back into the political arena again. It would be better to leave that railway alone for the time being, if political ‘pres- tige is the object. of those who unearthed it, **Bob’’ Smith, son of Mrs. Mary Ellen Smith, has been mentioned as a candidate to contest Van- couver Centre against Hon. H. H. Stevens. It might as well be “Bob’’ as the ex-premier. . The reputation established du- ring the past by Canadian-bred and Canadian-owned cows was upheld recently when, at the end of a 305-day test held under the rules of the Canadian Record of performance, the Quebec-owned Ayrshire cow Nellie Osborne of Elmshade 16th broke the world’s record for milk and butter.fat production, and also set a new record for the breed in Canada. During the period of observation the cow. produced 21,251 pounds of milk and 909 pounds of butter- fat, Asan aftermath to the after- noon of sports on the New Hazel- ton athletic grounds, the ladies in charge of the refreshment booth put on dance in the hotel on Saturday night. There was a fair attendance and an enjoyable time was spent until midnight.
