The Yankees had to come

League's East Division.

playoff—only the second in
AL history—-when Dent and
Jackson belted home runs in
Fenway Park. Then they
eliminated Kansas City for
ihe third successive year in
the playoffs to qualify for the
Series.

This year, things started in
reverse fur New York, The
Yankees drupped the first
two games in Lous Angeles
last week and, playing with
the knowledge that only five

teams in Series history have
cume back from that kind uf
deficit, they turned it upside-
duwn,

The Dodgers, stung by
\hree consecutive losses in
New York, had vowed they
would recover at home. And,
very briefly, it Jouked like
they might.

Davey Lopes, heroic in de-
feat, opened the game by
sending Hunter's third pitch
into the left-field bleachers,
giving Lus Angeles a quick
lead as the Dodger Stadium
crowd of 55,985 roared its
appreciation.

It was Lopes's third homer
of the Series and marked
only the 13th Lime in World
Series history that a batter
has opened the game for his

team with a hume run..

But the lead lasted only
until the Yankees came to
bat in the second inning.
With one out, Graig Nettles—
whose spectacular defensive
play in the third game began
the New bee comeback—
stroked a single.

Jim Spencer walked and
that brought up Doyle, the
ruokie second baseman
pressed into playoff and
World Series action because
of a hamstring injury to all-
slar starter Willie Randolph.

The 23-year-old infielder,
who spent most of the season
in the minors, responded
with the first extra-base hit
of his major league career—
doubling over the head of left
fielder Dusty Baker.
