Election appeal urges | unity to oust Socreds Sept. 30 “There is no record of the Bennett-Bonner Socreds, or of Liberal leader Ray Perrault or Tory leader Davie Fulton protest- ing this infamous violation of Can- adian sovereignty and __ peace. Their silence can only be con- Strued as tacit agreement on this Pearson-Washington suicide deal. “In this election campaign, the People must see to it that this Vital issue of peace and survival Sets top priority, because it is Mseparably bound up with the Sellout of their resources heritage t ta U.S. monopoly. “B.C. needs a government, speaking in the name of its peo- ple, which will say to Lester B. Pearson and his Washington trig- ger-men: “Wipe out this shame —no nuclear arms in Canada, now or later. A nuclear-free Canada is the most vital essential for sov- ereign integrity and a United Canadian Contederatioon—not the flimsy pretext of a “Confedera- tion” Bennett now uses to again hoodwink the people for a hurry up election. Here is my contribution of $ Business at the polls onSept. 30. to defeat Big abor of B.C. to unload this Socred dictatorial brokerage and elect an NDP government, fully rep- resentative of labor, farmers, and the people generally. “The key to NDP victory, to end the maladministration and sellout of Socred dictatorship. to break the restrictive legislative shackles the Bennett government has placed upon organized labor, is unity and more unity. “Unity around policies of dem- ocratic reform and resources de- velopment serving the interests, first and foremost of B.C., can topple the Bennett government and restore the rich heritage of B.C. to its people. “The Fultons and Perraults, like Bennett, have nothing to of- fer B.C. except a continuation of policies dictated by Washington. Giving a clear-cut and courageous lead, and the will and readiness to unite with all sections of the people and organized labor, the NDP can be the next government of B.C. But to achieve this its leadership must divorce _ itself from mimicking the old-line parties of Big Business, from ‘out liberaling’ the Liberals and Tories in an effort to appear respectable. “The burning need of the people is to win back their province and its rich resources for their own well-being, not respectability. Such a clear and decisive bid for the unity required to topple the Bennett regime would also end the defeatism evident in working class ranks because of this at- titude of respectability. “NDP-farmer-labor unity at the polls on September 30, augment- ed by a number of Communist candidates and a Communist pro- gram for B.C. which places all the issues in bold perspective, and particularly that of resources and peace, can assure the end of a Socred regime of betrayal and doublecross. The best alterna- tive for the people of British Columbia will be the election of an NDP government.. The Com- munist Party will join with labor, farmers, and small business peo- ple to achieve that goal.” B.C. Communist Party cam- paign manager Charles Caron - told the PT Wednesday that the Provincial Committee of the party will meet in Vancouver Sat- urday to get the election cam- paign into high gear, to consider the party’s program and nomina- J tion of candidetes.— CP LABOR DAY MESSAGE Labor’s major task is fight for peace Fellow Workers: E Just when it appeared that the first steps were being taken to prevent the spread of nuclear arms and to begin the process of nuclear disarmament, the Pearson govern- ment has seen fit to bring these U.S. death weapons into our country. By this action it has made Canada a member of the nuclear club and opened the door to th: spreading of nuclear arms to other countries, in the first place rev- ' enge-seeking Western Germany. The Pearson government talks about disarmament but in fact is torpedoing it and opening the door to Can- ada becoming an expendable force in a nuclear war. sk ca * * The organized labor movement cannot ignore this new threat to the security of our country, the lives of the Canadian people and to all that labor stands for. It should make Labor Day this year into a mighty demonstration for peace, peaceful coexistence, disarma- ment and unalterable opposition to nuclear arms for Can- ada and her armed forces, and for new national policies that mean more jobs, higher living standards and im- proved social security for the Canadian people. The fight for peace and against, nuclear arms for Canada is the most important business confronting the working class and the great trade union movement today. If organized labor uses its great strength: if it coop- erates with all like minded Canadians, it can compel can- cellation of the nuclear agreement and thereby strike a great blow for peace, for disarmament, for Canadian se- curity and the well-being of the Canadian people. In extending fraternal greetings to the organized la- bor movement and to every working man and woman in Canada this Labor Day, the Communist Party calls up- on all to speak with one voice and act together; to com- pel the government and Parliament to cancel the nuc- lear agreement. or face defeat. No nuclear arms for Canada! It can be done. Compel the government to retreat National Executive Committee _ COMMUNIST PARTY OF CANADA LABOR ROUNDUP: Quebec Labor Code change would be a great victory Proposed changes in the Quebec labor code came up for discus- sion in the provincial legislature ‘recently. They are expected to be acted upon during the fall session. As reported in the July-August issue of the Montreal publication “Labor Facts,’’ the new code would repeal a vicious McCarthy- ite provision, adopted in 1953 (but made effective retroactively to 1944) under the Duplessis re- gime, which has long been attack- ed by the labor movement. Sec. 6 of the Labor Relations Act calls for decertification of: any union which ‘“‘tolerates, among its organizers or officers . » . persons adhering to a com- munist party or movement.” The proposal to repeal this in- famous provision came about as a result of a conference between labor, management and govern- ment. e In B.C., a number of coming events will be of major interest to the labor movement in the province. These are: e@ The international convention of the International Woodworkers of America. It will be held at the Bayshore Inn from Sept. 16-20 (inclusive). Among the guest speakers will be Walter Reuther, president of the United Auto Workers, federal labor minister McEachen, NDP national leader Tommy Douglas and CLC pres- ident Claude Jodoin. © The IWA district convention, at the Regional Auditorium, 2859 Commercial. Donald MacDonald, secretary-treasurer of the CLC, has been invited to attend. Dates are October 8-11. ® The annual convention of the B.C. Federation of Labor, to be held at the Hotel Vancouver from November 12-16. e The provincial convention of the NDP will open on Monday, November 18. Expected to play a prominent part in the deliberations of all: the above meets will be issues ass WALTER REUTHER such as automation, medicare, labor’s position in regard to NA- TO and NORAD and the peace fight in general, a Canadian merchant marine, etc. e The National Union of Public Employees and the National Union of Public Service Employ- ees will also be meeting. They will gather in separate conven- tions and then in a merging con- vention in Winnipeg, sometime around September 24. Their amalgamation would form the largest single national union in the country. As usual, the PT will carry full reports of all these important events. _. August 30 ,1963—PACIFIC TRIBUNE—Page 3
