June 14, 1984 Mr. R. A. Freeman City of Fort Coquitlam McAllister Avenue Port Coquitlam, B.C. Dear Mr. Freeman: I have recently spoken with Mayor Traboulay, concerning a petition that residents of our neighborhood would like to put forward to Council at a meeting in the near future. By way of this letter, I would like to formally request that our topic be placed on the agenda of a regular Council meeting, as it greatly concerns a large number of residents. Our neighborhood has long been plagued with a serious noise and traffic congestion problem, due to the unwelcome presence of dirt bike riders in the area of Mary Hill commonly referred to as, "The Pits". Specfically, we have had as many as ten vehicles laden with dirt bikes, dune buggies, etc. etc., parked outside our homes on the Western Drive cul-de-sac, not to mention a number also parked at the end of Paula Place. Through questioning, we have determined that many of these people come from various parts of the region, including Mission, Haney, Burnaby, and North Vancouver. Apparently, these pits are renowned. These people start their bikes outside our doors and proceed to roar off into the Pits, and, in addition, continue to ride back and forth very near all of the houses in the area. Many of the people who have signed the petition were quick to point out that there is also a very real danger of pedestrians being hit by the bikes, In fact, I was told of two such incidents involving children which occurred near Hazel Trembath School, behind Sandra Way. Many have said they can or wili no lunger enjoy a walk with their families in the area because of the situation. I would point out that, as a neighborhood, we have had some measure of success lately, in turning some of these vehicles away, but have very often had to call for the assistance of the:R.C.M.P. To say the least, our patience has been sorely tried, but we have no further wish to have to act as "vigilantes"; however, we believe we are entitled to a normally peaceful neighborhood. 1
