MEMORANDUM C ¢ UJ N C Mayor and Council September 30th, 1977 OCT 3 1977 Alderman John J. Keryluk Re: United Way Grant I have had a survey done with regard to United Way Grants in the Lower Mainland. Of the ten municipalities surveyed, seven contribute, three do not. Those contributing are: Coquitlam, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, New Westminster, West Vancouver, North Vancouver City, and Burnaby. Those not contributing are: Port Moody, Surrey and North Vancouver District. The average contribution is approximately $3,000. The highest contribution in 1976 was $9,000. from one municipality, the smallest was $150. As local Area Chairman, I would be remiss if f did not draw to the attention of Council the very real need for sharing a responsibility with the community in saying "YES" and giving the United Way. I am aware that the City of Port Coquitlam has not, as a matter of policy, given grants to any organization for the past seven years, I ; am also aware of the fact that most individuals, businesses and corporations in our.community have already given. I also know, from experience, of some who haven't. ' May I point out to Council that the United Way of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland is a combined appeal on behalf of 135 member agencies serving those in need. This is the reason why I would urge Council to exempt one organization only from the "no grants" policy -- this being the United Way. On October 3rd, all residences in the Lower: Mainland will have received in the mail, an appeal for a donation to the United Way. If Council is not prepared to support the United Way by at least a token contribution, is it any wonder that some of our citizens are skeptical? Let us consider at least a symbolic approval by a contribution, matching at least that ‘of the smallest grant in 1976 - $150.00, The United Way can only;be a success when the whole community gets behind it as surely it must. The need has never been greater. Please, SAY YES. Respectfully submitted, John J. Keryluk reverse’ stele. Cire Cuek
