CHRISTMAS HEATHER CHAPMAN shares ideas about selling This is the season of studio sales. Powers work uwround the clock t& get in on the holiday purchasing Uiough vanous sales inthe communily, But the one show many count on for nc-middle-man sales is the private studio shaw. One potter doing this tvpe of sale is Heather Chapman. Heather lives in Maple Ridge, a location she describes as ‘iat the best’ for decors: uve art purchasers, Two things she udvises to intrense traffic in the stidke wre 1) pulling an ad in the local newspaper amd putting wp lots of signs in the neighbour- hood. And 2) the sign directly in front of her home studio has a cluster of ballocns, These points may be self-evident to some, but Heather has begun to follow what real estile agents do with open house prome- uions. “If anyone has expertise in drawing people to a product, it's them,” she says. “With selling decorative art, whether it's pottery orscul pture the mest diffieult thing for me to de is pet the customer base.” After several years of selling wholesale to vious galleries across Canada, Heather found she was ‘hitting the wall’, Making the Same items over and over, and not selling work for what it’s really worth were lwoconcems that have made her take a second look al what she’s doing. Now Heather's in the final stretch of a fine arts degree through Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design and the future is opening up. She's moving away from the traditional raku ware she’s been making, and her new interests are processes in terra ce@ta and stoneware. But there are still a couple of years to go before she gets her degree. In the meantime, keeping ber chin up and leaming more about marketing are the main focus, Talking with other potters is one way she's dotng both.
