A10- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, August 13, 2003 Agitate and organize Dear Sir: Returning to CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD Terrace after a few weeks away from here I wonder if | inadvertently passed through a time machine which had beamed me back to the seventies. Back then the Liberal government, it was called Social Credit then, was al- tempting to shut dawn Skeenaview, now called Terraceview. 110 long-term resi- dents were to be relocated, who knows where. The old army huts in which they” lived were to be torn down and the !Oha of property sold to developers, However the labour. council, in what 1 consider its finest hour, picketed .in-30 below weather nnd’ stopped’ ambulances and taxis from moving the residents. ° After ministry meetings and a task- force appointed by the ministry, it was recommended that the society would re- ceive half an acre and 27. beds. The townspeople told the minister “no way” and six of us backed by the town during years of lobbying, \ negotiations and threats, etc. finally settled for 45 beds and promise of additional beds. Importantly, all the property was to be held in trust and can only be used for what you see to- day — tennis courts, horseshoe pil, play- ground, Kin Hut, Heritage Park and so on. Today as I look around. | do not see the population getling younger. This writer is at a stage where I may soon need support and it really makes me an- gry that these Victoria snake oil salesmen wan to take away what we fought so hard to achieve. . Gordon Campbell and his “liberals” tell us they will do more with less. Who The Mail Bag are they kidding. The only thing you can de with less is less. They are closing down long term facilities all over the province but have only vague plans about what to da with the displaced persons. Anyone familiar with the process of “aging knows that drastic changes such as moving ‘can be extremely upsetting and may even cause eafly death, “-. Tf-one-was cynical er paranoid, which of course J] am not, one may consider that seniors dying is improving the govern- ment’s bottom line and therefore desir- able for the government’s philosophy: put money before people. For those of you into conspiracy theo- ries consider this: Kitimat hospital: has one area with ‘extraordinary security measures perfectly suited for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Most if not all extended care seniors for the region will be moved to Kitimat who will retain a first aid station and refer all acute and emergency problems to Terrace. Those of us that took the government on before are now in the three score plus years category. We are counting on the peaple in Terrace not to let the bean ‘counters in Victoria déstroy what the. peo- ple who spent their life building this prov- ince and now needa hand and have every right to expect — a safe, caring and secure environment close to their families. Educate, agitate, organize. John Jensen, Terrace, B.C. We had a great time in Terrace Dear Sir: Please give our heartfelt thanks to all those who in any way contributed to making all these special Riv- etboat Days and city 75th anniversary ev- ents go so smoothly. _ From the time we boarded Hawkair down in Vancouver till we landed back in Vancouver some eight days later, Hugh and I thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The community put on a splendid show. Highlights were: . the Riverboat Days opening ceremony, the fantastic Memory Lane social, the parade itself and the sen- iors walk. Just seeing the many former residents come back to join in all these events made it even more special for us. Terrace is blessed with a terrific staff, and each contributed to make the weekend go so smoothly. Thanks to each and everyone of these. We were able.to catch up with many of our friends in Terrace and it was indeed a wonderful time. It is our hope that the unemployment and con- cerns about the very future of the vibrant city we once knew will soon turn a corner and things will improve for all residents in the northwest, particu- larly Terrace. This article mentions protecting weak sockeye returns to Kitwanga and Nanika but says nothing about Lakelse, ; This is surprising since--— in the past, Lakelse was recognized as one of the most productive, sockeye watersheds in the Skeena, with sockeye fry up to eight times the weight of. their counterparts in. Mor-. > ice Lake. are In addition, for its area, Lakelse supported one of the largest runs in the Skeena. oo Sadly, this is no longer the case and fast year’s. observations indicated the lowest ever sockeye re-. turns, Our count on. Scully Creek was a scant 220 fish, down from over 4,000° in 1996, wo Since the last year of. Department of Fisheries . and Oceans sockeye counting in Lakelse was 1998, it is puzzling to read. stalements like “sockeye stocks are coming back in greater numbers than -offi- cials predicted.” Perhaps fisheries, offi-.- cial Mr. David Einarson could share with all of us what was predicted for Lakelse and how it was ~ determined. rs Jan Maxwell, Lakelse Watershed .
