B2 Terrace Review — Wednesday, April 25, 1990 Habinger unbeaten | in Loggers’ Spiel Kitimat’s Gary Habinger won eight games in a row to finish up the 35th Annual Terrace Men’s Loggers Bon- spiel with the best overall record on April 14 weekend at the Terrace Curling Club. He won all six of his ‘A’ event games, plus both games in the grand challenge playoff. In the decisive contests, Don Palmer of Smithers was the vic- tim both times, Habinger. edged Palmer 4-3 in the ‘A’ final and knocked him off 8-6 in the challenge finale. The challenge earned Habinger a $265 cash prize. In the ‘A’ semi-finals, it was Palmer over Dave Dennis 9-4 and Habinger over Bob Fields of Burns Lake 6-1. The final for ‘B’ event provid- ed fans with the biggest thrill. Ron Murphy ran up an 8-1 lead after four ends against Jerry Meek of Kitwanga. But Meek didn’t quit. He eventually came back to steal one in the 10th to tie it up at 10-10 and send the contest into overtime. He stole three more in the 11th to count a 13-11 victory on a tremendous comeback. In ‘B’ semi-finals, Murphy took out George Kozak 14-3 — while Meek was taking care of Smithers’ Gord Pratt 8-4. Terrace’s John Evans won ‘C’ event. He defeated Tom O’ Neill of Smithers 8-3 in the final. In semi-final action, O’ Neill down- ed Jules Perry of Prince Rupert 10-6, and Evans outscored Scott Melimoyle 9-5. Sandy Middleton won ‘D’ event on a 10-5 victory over Rob Brown of Prince Rupert. Mid- dleton took out Don Hunt of 100 Mile House 7-5 in one semi- final, while Brown edged Glen Baker of Smithers 5-4 in the other one. For ‘E’ event it was Larry Rowe of Stewart counting a 6-5 win over Mark Flaherty of Prince George in the title match. Flaherty knocked off Henry Rauter 5-4 in his semi. Rowe bounced Wally Bridal of Burns Lake 8-1 in his semi. Sixty-four teams took part in this season ending bonspiel at the Terrace Curling Club. Air Pistol shooter 24th She didn’t come up to her per- sonal standards, but Terrace’s Ali Johnston still finished a commendable 24th out of 40 female competitors in air pistol at the world hand-gun cham- pionships in Los Angeles the first week of April. Shooting against the best from 14 countries, Ali turned in a score of 370 out of 400. She had hoped to place in the top half of final standings. Now back home, she’ll be practicing hard at the Rod and Gun Club for the Canadian National championships at Edmonton, July 14-21.
