PORT COQUITLAM MONTHLY REPORT FOR APRIL 1981 153. hours worked this month out of a minimum required of 152 hours since one statutory day was taken. 32 files: 14 in Port Coquitlam; 18 in Coquitlam The following are examples of situations I dealt with this month: (1) A friend of a chemically dependent person called me to speak at length about the friend's problem with alcohol. We talked about the symptoms of a chemically dependent person and the ways in which an intervention could take place so that the friend could be persuaded to seek help. Help would be available either through in-patient or out-patient treatment. The friend indicated that he would attempt to talk with the chemically dependent person and endeavour to have him meet with me. (2) This month there were several situations where parents contacted me with sincere concerns about their children's behaviour. The adolesents were either acting out by running away from home or disobeying their parents while at home. My involvement with the families was to assess the situations and ascertain the specific concerns from both the parents and the adolescents’ point of view. Following this I was able to refer them to other resources available. In my follow-up to this point, at least one of the families has sought assistance from a child psychiatrist in New Westminster. (3) While working an evening shift, I was aware of a domestic dispute taking place. The family was one which I had spoken with on a previous occasion. I assisted the R.C.M.P. member attending the scene by talking with the couple for some time and making referrals of other resources available to them. The couple wanted to go to the hospital since the woman had been struck in the face. They could not afford a taxi and did not have plates on their vehicle so I offered to drive them to the hospital. In my follow-up several days later they were eager to begin counselling with one of the agencies I referred them to. It is also important to mention that initial plans are being made for a possble monthly forum of agencies and professionals in the Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody areas. Daryl BURNHAM of SHARE Society, Gavin PERRYMAN of United Way and myself have met and are in the process of setting up initial meetings to bring this forum about by the fall of 1981. As the warmer days of summer approach I have a growing concern about the numbers of youths on our streets just “hanging around", The potential for .«ime is great as these people might seek to overcome their boredom with a variety of illegal activities.
