_ TERRACE —The B.C. Old Age Pensioners Organization, Branch 73, located at the Happy Gang Centre, celebrated their sixth aniversary of the opening of the centre in 1980. The BCOAP Organi- zation was instituted in the fall of 1958, said past president Gladys Oliver. A charter was grarited for the group of senior citizens on Dec. 15, 1958. | First elected president, W.D. Griffiths, held that office until his passing in 1971, Oliver said. The. first secretary was Muriel O’ Boyle. Meetings were (first held in. the United Church and later in the auditorium of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 13. From there, on the completion of the original Terrace Com- ‘munity Centre, members of Branch 73 were presented with. life membership privileges and meetings were held -in that centre until Aug. 1971 when-the building was destroyed by fire, Oliver said. . . Once agajn the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 allowed us to hold our -meetings in their auditorium. From there, Oliver said, a room was set aside for the use of senior citizens at the arena complex, Meetings were held there until the opening of. the building named. Happy. On the second Satur- day of each month the ‘Men serve a pancake breakfest and a pot luck supper is enjoyed once a month followed by a dance or other entertain- ment, Oliver added, ‘‘We have hosted seniors from areas as far away as Ed- monton, Alberta. We have also travelled to other centers as well. “ Oliver stated that several local organiza- tions have given freely of ‘their time to assist the Branch 73 members. The Terrace Kinettes have provided transportation for members who attend meetings.. They also serve lunch following the regular monthly meeting, said Oliver. Seniors celebrate 6th anniversary _ On Valentine’s Day a Sweetheart dinner and dance is held at which a Valentine Queen and consort are chosen from among members. The event is also sponsored by the Terrace Kinettes. At Christmas’ each year a dinner and dance is held in the Royal Canadian Legion build- ing sponsored by the Ladies of the RCL Aux- | iliary (Branch 13). In June the ladies of the Royal Purple entertain at ‘a tea and social after- noon in the Elks building on Tetrault Street. They also serve tea and coffee at the seniors annual tea and bazaar held in the fall.
