Rather than be com- placent and confident in “experts’’ and authority - come out: voice your concerns and pose your questions. I am keen on seeing the hotsprings ‘‘go’’. It would be a great asset to our area. But, I have a fely questions that I want satisfactory answers for. I have a vested interest in clean water. The water the development is in- terested in flushing into is the water I’m drink- ing! Questions: Where does the chlorine go from the water side? What about con- diseases like typhoid or type A hepatitis? I gather they spread through sewage contaminated drinking water. What _ preventive measures are in place to prevent outbreaks? Where will Mount Layton development get its own drinking water? How many people get their drinking water from the lake now? How many septic tanks/fields are failing at the lake in a manner whereby they are adding nutrients to the lake? Can we afford to add more nutrients? Regarding eutrophica- tion, Pve been told that eutrophication potential is greater in shallows due to reduced flushing in these areas. I gather ‘Lakelse Lake has shallow areas? What about the Lakelse Lake clams? I gather they used to be edible and now they are not. Why? They are a food for the river otters I see out here. What ef- fects will the sewage have on the clams? In Prince Rupert now they want to move the sewage outflow pipe out further as the shellfish in the harbor have been contaminated by sewage. What is in- store for us? The broad perspective of this issue is the impact of Mount Layton Hot- springs on Lakelse Lake: eg. will there be more boats on the lake? or _ what will be the impact on the lake from the boats eg: re. phosphorus concentrations and noise? Lastly: Why is this be- ing addressed so late in the year? I gather we have deadlines of July 1986 hanging over our [Questions- to be asked collective heads for Mt. Layton Hotsprings. Why? Perhaps an exten- sion could be granted while we sit this out? Aside from the impact on m myself as a human in the lake ecosystem, | have concerns for other animals in the lake ecosystem. Eagles, ot- ters, kingfishers, trumpeter swans, Canada geese, all fish, | widgeons, miailards, common mergansers, moose, bear, dragonflies, beaver, loons, etc. (ah, yes, and mosquitoes!) Remember as Brian Gregg said in his letter to the editor recently; ‘“‘Water covers nearly three-quarters of the earth, but only three per- cent of it is freshwater and most of this is ice.’’ Lakelse Lake is fresh water — so far. Yours respectfully, Judy Chryslee.
