HAMILTON — The Canadian Labor Congress has issued a warning to the labor council here, concerning the anti-labor ac- tivities of the U.S. Labor Party, alias North American Labor Par- ty, alias NCLC, alias ICLC. The Hamilton and District Labor Council reproduced the letter signed by CLC President Joe Morris, and is circulating it among its affiliates. Morris’ communique to the Hamilton Labor Council followed a letter from council Secretary Bill Stet- son Jan. 5, requesting information on the group from the CLC. ‘There is not one iota of com- mon ground between the ideals and philosophy of the labor movement and the objectives and tactics of the NCLC,’’ Morris wrote, and continued, ‘‘I would definitely recommend against any co-operation whatever with that organization.”’ The CLC letter gives a com- prehensive and detailed history of the anti-union group, pointing out © that “much of its membership (es- timated at about 1,000 in the U.S.) is made up of well to do families from outside organized labor.”’ ene NCEG’s “tactics: of ““scare-mongering, slander, and It is not unusual for the capitalist press to present news in a distorted form. United States Secretary of State Henry Kis- singer’s meeting in West Ger- many last week with John Vors- ter, Prime Minister of racist South Africa, is a case in point. Head- lines suggested United States _ support for majority black rule in Africa. Nothing, of course, could be further from the truth. That much is clear from the fact that the ruling class of the U.S. itself has not yet put an end to racial segregation more than 100 years after the Civil War to abolish slavery, and 200 years after the anti-colonial revolution. Most disturbing today, in the U.S. and Canada, is the lip ser- vice paid to “‘freedom’’ by trade union leaders, of the right-wing hue, who echo the capitalist cry for freedom to exploit human be- ings. But when it comes to ra- cism, they are often silent be- cause in their reactionary hearts and minds they believe in racism, as they believe in capitalist exploitation. It is, therefore, in order to con- gratulate those trade union lead- ers in U.S. and Canada today, in- cluding the Canadian Labor Con- gress, who condemn the system of apartheid in South Africa. There racism has been elevated to Official state policy in the interest of capitalist monopolies and their super-exploitation of the Black people. That is why South Africa is a huge slave-labor camp. And that is why today’s neo- colonialists — including the Canadian variety — wish to keep it that way, and are prepared to go to any length to retain the status quo. outright violence’’ are exposed in the letter which also pointed out how the organization has _at- tacked labor leaders, particularly those of the United Auto Workers which the letter also notes “‘they seem to hate more than others.” Some of the tactics referred to in this regard include: distributing leaflets implying that union lead- ers are homosexuals; carrying out “bait and switch’? operations meaning the baiting of union lead- ers into excessive reactions which they can then interpret for prop- aganda purposes; along with the usual disruptive tactics of scabs, including busting up union meet- ings and news conferences called by unions. The letter also notes that cur- rently the UAW is suing the or- ganization for the use of the word ‘*Solidarity’’, the name of the union’s publication, in their periodical. ' It points out also how the NCLC picketed the 1974 Van- couver CLC convention, dis- rupted thé 1974 OFL convention in Niagara Falls, and disrupted a recent CLC press conference dealing with the wage controls ‘‘by shouting and accusing the ‘congress and its affiliates of being The latest massacres of Black men, women and children in the Black ghettos of South Africa have shocked all civilized people, at least those in our capitalist so- . ciety who are still capable of hu- man feelings and emotions. It is important that we see the system ‘which brings racism and fascism in its wake. The United States of America has its ‘Murder Incor- porated’. South Africa has its so- called ‘Citizens Reserve Force’, a white vigilante group ‘‘which was allowed to go into Soweto to mur- der the Blacks’. So the U.N. Committee Against Apartheid was told on June 23, 1976 by Mr. Valderrama of the Philippines, a member of this 18-nation U.N.. body. The Blacks of Soweto, the township, or ghetto of a million Blacks outside Johannesburg, ‘were demonstrating for justice and human rights most of us take for granted. Such rights are pre- scribed under the statutes of Apartheid, which provides: e An African native who lived there 50 years but who left for more than two weeks is not en- titled to return to the country where he was born. If he does he can stay no longer than 72 hours. e A labor officer may, at any time, cancel the employment of an African who works in a town, no matter how long he has been employed, even though his employer opposes cancellation. _e No African has the right to ac- quire real estate anywhere in South Africa. The present gov- ernment has no intention of grant- ing this right to natives, not even in lands ‘‘reserved’’ for them. e Ifa Black person (i.e. Asian, or PACIFIC TRIBUNE—JULY 9, 1976—Page 6 Time to act in anti-apartheid fight fascists.”’ Morris went on to show that de- spite the Marxist veneer behind which the NCLC hides ‘‘the or- ganization’s tactics ... are closer to the extreme right. They are considered similar to those used by the John Birch Society of the mid-1960’s’’. Noting that “‘nothing they dis- tribute carriés a union label’, the letter pointed to other sources which have come into contact — with. the organization. From an American university newspaper: in Madison, Wisconsin, the letter quotes: “‘... NCLC, as it seems -.to exist today has the markings of a truly indigenous movement.”’ fascist From Liberation News Ser- vice, a radical press agency which supplies many university and progressive newspapers in the U.S. and Canada with informa- tion; and which has_ studied NCLC very closely, the letter quotes: “Until the financial re- cords of NCLC are made availa- ble to public scrutiny, we will not know who the real sponsors are. In the meantime NCLC is a dangerous organization which must be guarded against.”’ a Coloured person or an African) sits on a bench in a public park which has been reserved for the exclusive use of white persons... he commits a criminal offense punishable by a fine up to R.600 or imprisonment for three years or a whipping of up to ten strokes or any two of the three possible punishments. e No person in charge of a hospi- tal which has been established af- ter 1937 may admit an African to it” (except in the event of an emergency) without permission of the Minister of Bantu Ad- ministration and Development. e No African, even if he or she is lawfully residing in a town by virtue of a permit issued to him or her has the right to have his/her spouse and children residing there. This means that the cities are reserved for the white minority. If you, who read these lines, get indignant at these inhuman rules of a racist government, make sure you do something about it. Get your trade union involved in fighting apartheid in Africa and racism everywhere. Boycott South African goods. Get others to do the same. Demand that our government stop any dealing with the neo-fascist Vorster regime. Demand that all resolutions with respect to South Africa adopted by the United Nations be re -spected and enforced. - _ Make your contribution to the struggle for human emancipation, to ban racism, to put and end to imperialism and war. Imperialism means fascism and_ war. Socialism means. peace and genuine freedom. The future be- longs to socialism. LETTER FROM LEBANESE CP | Syrian action in Lebanon criticized | The Central Committee of the - Communist Party of Canada has received a statement from Nicolas Chaoui, secretary-general of the Lebanese Communist Party, de- nouncing “the imperialist - plot against Lebanon and Syria’s inva- sion of that country. The following are translated excerpts from the statement, issued June 16, 1976: kA*. Armed Syrian troops have for many days been invading Lebanon, spreading fire and destruction in populous areas of the cities and in the countryside, as well as in the camps of Pales-. tinian refugees. The civilian vic- tims, women, children, old people, are counted in the thou: sands. Many localities and r- gions, so far spared in battles, are now invaded and ravaged. The food blockade, imposed on the territories and people supporting the progressive Lebanese forces, is aimed at starving whole regions and especially Beirut, the capital. Nevertheless, the progressive Lebanese forces and the com- mand of the Palestinian Revolu- tion have persistently done every- thing to inform the Syrian leaders about the situation in Lebanon and the reality of the plot under- taken by reaction and imperialism against Lebanon and the Pales- tinian cause. They have spared no effort to reach an: agreement with the Damascus leaders on a common position to end the Lebanese crisis, and thus avoid a worsening of their relations with Syria that could lead to armed confronta- tion. From day to day it has become more evident that the differences were not the result of an er- roneous analysis by the Syrian leaders, nor of a misconception about the Lebanese reality ... .. The Syrians have inter- vened to support reaction, threat- ened with total defeat, to use the language of force and to per- petrate an outright armed aggres- sion, after the failure of their efforts to intimidate.
