School pulls Harry Potter of its library from shelves Content being reviewed after parent complaints By JENNIFER LANG . HARRY POTTER has been pulled from the shelves at Centennial Christian School in Terrace. , The wildly popular books about a boy wizard have been credited with turning millions of children into avid . Teaders — but some parents don't approve. oe __...The series is no longer in circulation at the school’s Jibrary, even though. the books don’t violate the school’s library and literature policies. “At this point,.we have not thrown the books out of the school,” principal Frank Voogd said, “We haven’t banned them, but we have set them aside for discussion and review.” School officiais launched the review after some par- ents complained about the content of the books, which -are a series describing the adventures of a young orphan named Harry, who attends Hogwart's School of Wizardry and Witchcraft. © 7 ‘The Harry Potter series, penned by U.K. author J. K. Rowling, have also spawned two feature films, including the blockbuster Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, which opened in theatres in the fall. ' ~Moogd said the issue over whether the books belong ‘in the privately-run Christian school has generated de- bate among parents, staff and administration. Some Christian groups have attacked the books and the two subsequent movies for promoting witchcraft and black magic. “Voogd said the school decided to review the books __after hearing a number of complaints from parents. >. It's not known when a final decision over the fate of ‘the Harry Potter books will be made. “We are continuing with discussions in the school. * It’s ongoing,” said Voogd.
