There’s a dinner and dance this Saturday to celebrate the anniversary. ‘Auxiliary enjoys 70 years THEY’ RE THE coldest, con- linually running auxiliary in the province. ‘Last week the Ladies Aux- iliary of the Royal Canadian Legion, branch 13, marked its 70th. anniversary. And this Saturday they celebrate with a dinner and a dance. The goals of the auxiliary haven’t changed much in all that time, said president Jes- sie Gowe. - “Our goal is still the same — to help veterans and their dependents and to serve the community.”’ : But Marje Cromarty, chair of the 70th anniversary committee, says ihere’s been a shift in focus over the years, towards more community work. - There are about 50 active members in the auxiliary, proving that the socicty is still very busy. . They donate money to the hospital, youth programs, and ‘the air cadets, In con- junction with the Legion, members also donate to the Salvation Army, community émergency services, Ter- taceview Lodge, and school lunch programs, among others. * Gowe says the auxiliary raises most of ibis money by providing catering. services for about 40 functions a year. ‘ Prices have gone up a bit Since they first started though. & look back in the minutes of 1948 show that plates of food went for just 25 cents a piece, during a catered tea. : Over the years that cater- ing business has not only provided money for local charilics, it’s also been great experience for the women involved. - Cromarty now runs her own business because of the experience she gained doing catering. + But they both say its the comradeship, and the enjoy- ment of helping others that keeps auxiliary members volunteering. ‘The Legion is part of my family, ” explains Gowe, who wasn’t bom in Canada. “Hts my home.
