ares ees "CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD The Mail Bag Keepers in conflict Dear Sir: Tm writing about Mr. Joe Sullivan’s Feb. 7 letter “White not a keeper” regarding Mr. Ric White and his as- sociation with the Terrace Promise Keepers — Men of [n- tegrity Society. There’s no disputing what Mr, White did. What I feel I can dispute is the treatment Ms. Tammy Fee received when she reached out to two other other Promise Keepers for assistance in dealing with Mr. White in the period following the slashing of her tires but in the days prior to the attack and Mr. White’s arrest. Ms, Fee was secking advice, some help to case her concerns of her fear for her life. These concerns were never validated. . _ It was however suggested to her that perhaps her adulterous liaison was of some blame and Mr. White would be. receiving counselling for such involyement. Mr, . White was obviously well on his way to mending the error of his ways and she should do something similar, [Tam also concerned about those men, other Promise Keepers, who indicated after Mr. White’s arrest, their will- igness to assist him. IT am certain these men believed in his innocence but] must wonder about their priorities. What about Ms. Fee? As a human being and a Christian, was she not entitled to the same courtesy? As a woman not yet legally divorced she obviously. was not. In the weeks following the attack she was approached by friends of Mr. White, not to support her in her time of need but to instead encourage her to drop the charges. Ms. Fee has stated the only reason she lived through that night of terror was through the grace of God. It’s:not God that has me worried; it’s bis fan club. This particular case of double standard of who was worthy of support leaves me doubly concerned. From the book ‘Seven Promises of a Promise Keeper’, pastor Tony Evans writes: ‘‘The first thing you do is sit down with your wife and say something like this; ‘Honey, I've made a terrible mistake. I've given you my role. J gave up Icading this family, and ] forced you to take my place. Now I must reclaim that role.’ Den’t misunderstand what I’m saying here, I’m not suggesting that you ask for your role back, I’m urging you to take it back ... Be sensi- live, Listen, Treat the lady gently and lovingly. But lead!” If Promise Keepers are to truly follow that: train of thought I say they are in a conflicting situation when a woman seeks their help. As men of integrity they should immediately announce that conflict and urge her to seek external assistance, Caro] Sabo, Coordinator, Terrace Women’s Resource Centre Don’t call us. .... Dear Sir: Tam writing this letter to ask a simple question of why there are two telephone prefix numbers (ic. 635 and 638) for a small community like Terrace? I have a number that begins with 635, Starting last August, when a government service decided to change its number (which matched my aumber except beginning with 638), I have received hundreds of calls to this government service. BC Tel and the government agency’s response co me was to change my number. However, my muniber.is quite estab- lished as a small business, Besides, knowing my luck, 1 would get another number which matched some other ser- vice which receives hundreds of calls cach day. This situation bas been very frustrating considering the primary telephone prefix number for Terrace is 635; thus people are conditioned ta dialing these numbers first. If there is a need to have a different prefix number, at the very least government and other highly called services should be beginning with 635 or an entirely different num- ber (ie, a 1-908 number) to distinguish them Crom residen- tial and business telophone numbers. Month later, I still receive many calls each day to the government service and am appealing to people who call government or other public service ta please be more care- ful when dialing one of these numbers, Remember, government service numbers begin with 638. George T, Krantz, Terrace, B.C, All in this together Dear Sir: - Lam very annoyed by the Jan. 31, 1996 editorial “Us or them.’ Did the editor recognize how many Nisga’a, Kitimat and Prince Rupert dollars are spent ta make Ter- race *'Show your Pride’??? Did ‘the editor do his homework to obtain further in- formation on why Kilimat council made its decision about the airport? Bashing a third party based on a single issue with a mix of half-truths is unfair, biased and bad taste. I think it will be more appropriate that the editor should have dedicated a column every week to praise Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Nisga’a cousumers spending their hard- earned money in Terrace, Nisga’a, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Terrace are equal partners. Anthony Yao, Terrace, B.C, Don’t exclude us Dear Sir: - I'm writing to protest the exclusion of labour from the school district's educational change and communication committee. This decision to exclude labour from the pro- cess intended to shape education programs for high school students is shortsighted, deplorable and counterpreductive. The decision relegates labour to being on the outside, taking potshots at the commillee and its work. This is nota new experience for labour; we are pretty good at it. But frankly, we would rather be involved in improving educa- tion for our children.
