Guzelle rates, . _ SATURDAY, MARCH 23, 1918. ~ Britain’s Outlook The long weeks of foreed inac- tion on the western front, -con- trasted with thé rapid advance of Germany in the east and her|: forcing of her peace terms on Russia, Rumania and Finland, do not tend to make the Allies more cheerful, And just at this junc- ture we are informed that British shipbuilding has fallen down sad- sy. and even now the great ship- yards -on the Clyde are idle because of some labor difficulty, And while General Maurice com- forts us by saying trat the Allied superiority in men is diminishing steadily on the western front, Bonar Law gives us some more . of the same kind of comfort by assuring us thatif the Germangy choose tu attack the Allies at Saloniki it may be impossible to resist them. And meanwiile Sir Edward Carson atlacks Sir Erie Geddes for removing Sir John Jellicoe, suggesting to the public mind that a mistake has been made in this most important matter, It is stnall wonder that the average Britisher, listening to this tale of woe, is ready to believe almost anything. But the war Is not over yet, and des- pite all her bragging we do not think that Germany relishes the idea of trying to smash her way through the western linea, And it is evidently now or never, And if Germany fails to smash the ' Allied line it is only a question of time before the Allied troops will be across the Rhine. The German high command officials are anxious to frighten Britain with the threat against India, but they know only too well that if _ their western line does not hold, their. entire program of Russian conquests will be utterly worth-|] "less, Germany cannot win save ‘by smashing the western front, and al her spectacular successes elsewliere have not perceptably improved ‘her chances there, -The-Allies have not lost the battle ‘and they are not going to Jose it. The fact that 150,000,000 English- p: ‘speaking people are -pledged to see. it: through | in a fact we can not afford to ignore. - ‘Britain and the - Uniled States ‘have never before fought. shoulder to shoul- der, but they are doing it ‘now, |, and the fact. is one: oniinovia to To the Tuscania’s Dead. {Your weapons yet unsheathed you rest Comrades, benehth our British watera sleeping, ° To whom death came thus early on! the tide, There eomes to us the sound of wo- men’s weeping For those in whom we share their country’s pride. You struck no blow in that high cause you cherished While day by day you learned the soldier’s trade, Yet was your task accomplished when you perished, Calm-eyed and undismayed. Me Not yours to know the joys of high endeavor Amid ‘the crash and thunder of our war, for ever And home and kin shall know your light no more, But in our inmost hearts is writ your story, Nor pride of place nor ‘honor shall you yield To those who yet shail » win a crown of |; glory On some victorfovs field. And to-the hearts whose pride it is to render Their best and dearest in these cruel | days There speeds a message infinitely ten- der From us who know the price that freedom pays. We knew you not, whose heart was atrong to aid us, But let the manner of your passing tell Our common kinship to the sires that made us. ; - Hail, brothers, and farewell! —TOUCHSTONE, COAL NOTICES Hazelton Lani District.
