Page 4, The Heraid, Friday, September 14, 1979 Grounded ferry captain misjudged VANCOUVER (CP} — The captain of the ferry Queen of Alberni made an error in judgment, but was nol negligent in the Aug. § grounding of the vessel in a narrow channel off Van- couver Island, two separate Inquiries concluded Thur- 'y. The investigations, con- ducted by the B.C. Ferry Corp. and federal transport department, found that the esence of small fishing tain Active Pass was not a@ factor in the accident. Captain Al Bahry, 51, feared that by steering a normal course through the tricky waters of the pass he might run afoul of another ferry, the Queen of Tsawwassen, which was entering the channel from the other end, the inquiry re- ports said. He sleered the Alberni deeper than usual to avold the other ferry, the tidal current threw hint further off course and. the vessel slammed into Colfiston reef, It was noted that Bahry had piloted ferries through Active Pass about 68,000 times, but was new to the Alberni. A separate report on the issue of small boat safety in the pass will be handed down after Canadian Coast Guard Officials hold meetings with all interested groups. . Charles Gallagher, general manager of the provinciallyowned ferry corporation, said Bahry would not be disciplined. “It's not a question of dis- cipline because he’s not negligent,” Gallagher said, Although Bahry had only been master of the Alberni for two days at the time of the grounding, he had been thoroughly briefed on the vessel by other captains. Ferry officials will go over the incident in detail with the captain tohsee if anything further can be learned from the mishap, Gallagher said. A corporation spokesman said Bahry currently is on vacation, but would: soon return to his dutles. He was not available for comment Thursday. ~ THE FACLUSIVE DOLBLE-LGG WALL SYSTEM CONSISTS OF T THICK PEINELAHG EXTERIOR WALES QO ITIEIASE LATION INV BETS EEN = The exclusive DOUBLE-LOG Woll System: The mos! effective system availoble...Saves fuel...Saves energy...Saves heat. The passenger, truck and car ferry was sailing from Tsawwassen on the B.C, mainland to Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island with 9 passengers, a crew of 22, and 74 vehicles on board when she struck the reef at 7:10 am, All on board took to boats and were picked up by the passing: Queen of Tawwassen, No one was injured, but damage to the ferry was eqtimated at more than $1 million. Damage to the. vehicles on board, which were tassed about on deck as the grounded ferry listed, was heavy. The Alberni was pulled free of the reef at late the same day and was towed to Tsawwassen where the vehicles were removed. She then went to Burrard Dry Dock in North Vancouver for repairs and will be out of service until October. * ‘Transport Minister Alex Fraser, minister responsible for the ferry corporation, welcomed the federal inquiry into small boat safety in Active Pasa. He said corporation of- ficials would be discussing course — with coast guard officials any corrective measures the : ferries could take to ensure - safe passage through the » pass for ferries, pleasure | aters and fishermen alike. 4 Fraser said the cor- - poration has been worried . for some time about . congestion in Active Pass.
