PAGE Az, THE HERALD, Wednesday, March 30, 1977 Larry Sherman new Sales Manager Jim McEwan, President of McEwan GM, has an- nounced the appointment of ‘Larry Sherman as Sales Manager of the firm, replacing Stu Crouse who has accepted a position in Powell River. Larry has been a resident of Terrace for the past eight _years and has been with the - GM dealership for the past ‘two. He came to Terrace ‘from Hope where he was ‘involved in logging. He worked here as a grapple- yarder operator for Twin River. He later went into the insuranee business with Prudential Insurance. Larry is married to Judy -and they have four children. Both he and his wife are active in the community. Larry was External Vice President of the Jaycees and was chairman of the Jaycee Trades Fair. Judy is currently Vice President of the Jaycettes. Larry looks to the future with optimism and he makes it quite clear that he is still a part of the McEwan sales team. He looks for- ward to seeing old eustomers and welcomes any new ones. He mentioned that the dealership is getting into the general line of heavy trucks and in this connection he is almost through a correspondence course from the Truck Marketing Institute which is designed to enable him to properly assess what is required from a particular truck ta best perform a specific job. ; In addition to the general truck lines Larry is looking forward to the coming of spring as he anticipates a record year for the firm in recreation vehicles. He has arranged for complete lines of trailers and campers as well as mobile and motor homes. Jim McEwan was en- thusiastic about the future with his new sales manager. He said that he was very sorry to see Stu Crouse leave but as it was a step up in Stu’s career he did not feel that he should try to disuade him in his decision. It makes the transition easy he noted, having a young man on the go like Larry to step into the breach. He said that Larry is a_ sales- oriented man who will still be a big part of the sales team. Larry himself agrees that he will be out on the Jot more than at his desk. Nowhere in Canada has a provincial government made such a strong com- mitment to meetin shelter needs of the elderly. Many senior citizens are seeing a steady increase in the portion of their income required for shelter — some are paying as high as 50 and 60 percent of their income on rent, This legislation provides the minister with the power to make direct cash payments to those elderly renters in need. For the purposes of this Act, “elderly” is defined as a person 65 years of age or older and “in need” is defined as a person paying in excess of 30 percent of income on rent. Single elderly renters in need will receive up to $70 per month | $25,000 question unanswered Municipal Affairs Minister Hugh Curtis has refused to answer ‘a question of morality” about a $25,000 gift being given to a group of northern B.C. municipalities by an oil- pipeline company. Two days after he first asked the question, Graham Lea, New Democratic ML.L.A. for Prince Rupert, ~ was ruled out of order in the - Terrace Legislature when he asked: “Whatis the minister’s idea of morality in-terms of a private company giving $25,000 to a municipal government convention.” The gift was given to the North Central Municipal Association to insure that their convention would be held in part on the vessel Princess Patricia which would carry delegates along to have its own dollar Mayor Gordon Rowland has proclaimed a trade -dollar initiated by the British Columbia Yellowhead 16 Travel Association as negotiable currency in Terrace bet- ween July 1 and September 5, 1977. The ‘Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters Act’ also amends the provincial “Income Tax Act’ to facilitate a meshing of the Renter's Tax Credit Program with the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters Program. Effective January 1, 1978, elderly renters will have the option of participating under one or the other, but not both, of these programs. Greatly increased benefits will be available under the Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters Program for those in need. Also effective January i, 1978, the guaranteed 40 minimum Renter's Tax Credit for elderly renters will be discontinued. The resulting saving allows us to provide greater assistance to those truly in need of help. ‘The Act also allows for the administrative details relating to Shelter Aid for Elderly Renters Program to be determined regulation. The ministrative details covered by regulation are: a, the formula on which Shelter Aid payments are based, including maximum assistance levels and maximum claimable rent levels, and ad. b. the rules for deter- mining whether or not a rson is eligible to receive elter Aid payments.
