CCCL approves move for political action A campaign of political educat e MONTREAL ion and political action, which will enable affiliated bodies to back up candidates in elections, was decided on at the 34th Congress of the Canadian Catholic Confederation of Labor. The Congress, attended by 500 delegates representing 100,000 members met September 18-25. The decision for political action came as the climax to a momentous two-day debate. It was taken by secret ballot vote, with 248 delegates voting for and 103 against. The resolution calls for: Appointment of a permanent officer to work on political education and political action throughout the province. ¢ “The gathering together on a regional basis, of all groups who. are interested in taking Part in political action. Such Political action shall be orient- ed, wherever it is opportune, towards the election of can- didates who stand for the general welfare.” No formation of a labor poli- tical party by the CCCL, or its affiliation to a political Party. Congress delegates also called for closer cooperation between the CCCL and the Catholic Union of Farmers, largest farm body in the province. Louis Philippe Poulin, secretary- general of the CUF, addressing the convention, said: “Our movement has much in common with yours.” Rene Pare, head of the largest cooperative body in Quebec also spoke. The debate on labor political ac- tion was the most vital to rock a major trade union gathering in Quebec in many years.
