2 eeoeee 2. Gun Legislation The question of gun legislation was referred to the Environmental Protection Committee. The Committee reviewed the information submitted by Mrs. Burtinshaw and also a letter submitted by the B.C. Wildlife Federation. The Committee feels that the greatest need is to include in gun legislation, strict controls for storage and security of guns. This would apply particularly . to stores handling guns for sale. In this regard, the Committee agrees with Parts A, B and C of Clause 1 of Mrs. Burtinshaw's resolution which is attached and with item 1 and the first sentence of item 4 in the letter from the B.C. Wildlife Federation. The Committee does not endorse the idea that all guns and rifles should be legally registered as this would require a tremendous amount of clerical effort and as has been shown in the United States, registration of firearms has not reduced gun offences. The Committee did not wish to comment on the other points raised by both Mrs. Burtinshaw and the Wildlife Federation. The Committee felt that maximum fines or automatic jail sentences etc. as proposed, would be more properly dealt with by another level of government. The Committee recommends that the above-mentioned portions of the two documents attached be endorsed and that letters be written to the three levels of government requesting that gun laws be amended to incorporate these provisions. of control legislation.
