A12- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, November 18, 1998 Flying game gets trickier THERE’S GOOD news and bad news for passengers who fly Canadian Regional Airlines, the Canadian Air- lines subsidiary which took: over northwest passenger service from its parent the end of October. The good news is you may not be riding as many buses as hefore from Prince Rupert when weather makes it impossible to Jand here. But the bad news is you might be spending more time in the Vancouver air- port waiting for a plane to leave. ‘ Tt alk stems from an. unintended by-product of a change in the schedule be- tween the two airlines. Canadian flew a triangle mn of Vancouver-Terrace- Prince Rupert while Cana- dian Regional flies direct Vancouver-Terrace or Vancouver-Prince Rupert. So when the Terrace air- port was closed because of weather, Canadian Airlines diverted to Prince Rupert because the aircraft was going there anyway. But since Canadian Regional flies direct to Ter- race, diverting to the Prince . Rupert airport won't be as . easy a decision to take as it was with Canadian Airlines. **¥es, we will still have a bussing policy, but there are a number of other factors that will come into play,’’ says Canadian Regional spokesman Dennis Erick- som. **We are not going to bus every time we miss." Juggling those factors will - begin in Vancouver before the plane leaves and chief among them will be the weather. If the forecast is poor a de-' cision might be made to - cancel the flight and move — affected passengers to the next one, says Erickson. “‘The weather is some- | thing we can’t control and we have to look at our costs. We don’t want to take up our time and the time of our passengers by leaving without having a chance of landing,” he added. The ideal mix in this situa- tion is if the number of af- fected passengers can be added to those of the next Put it on paper KITIMAT-STIKINE regional district chairman Joanne Monaghan wants aiflines to provide their wiitien policies on bussing from Prince Rupert if planes can’t land here when the weather is bad. Monaghan said she had heard rumours that AlrBC, one of two airlines serving the airport, was going to limit its bussing option. And although she has now been told that AirBC will continue, she wants to see it on paper. “That also applies to Ca- nadian Regional,’’ Monaghan said last week, “People want to know if they'll be able to get home.” Monaghan has taken the lead in the northwest when it comes to airline service by pressing the two carriers‘ for concessions. She's organized one ses- sion between the regional district and the airlines and wants to hold another in the new year. “What choice do we have when we want to travel,”’ said Monaghan. ‘‘Either we fly or we drive for two days or take the bus for three.”’ Monagahn said the first session with the airlines resulted in lower farcs for those who have to fly on short notice because of sick family members. And she said there’s also been far more seat sales in the last while than ever be- fore. “When you get both air- lines in the same room atthe - same time, they get awfully competitive,” - Monaghan noted. ne The Kermode Friendship Centre DRY DANCE We Support Drug Awareness Week! ae wut having It The Kermode Friendship Canire will be hosting a Dry Dance. “We will take every Band: “Us Guys” means to protect those first ‘ When: On Friday November 20, 1998 passengers,”’ said Erickson. They’ll have to pick up their own expenses unlil the next ' flight, “It will be on our expense if we take off with the ex- pectation of landing only to have to return,” said Erick- son continued. Chances of taking the bus from Prince Rupert will in- crease if the flight is full and if the weather in Terrace is bad and if the next flight is also heavily booked, said Erickson. That’s because Canadian Regional wants to avoid have too much of a backlog, Erickson did say the chances of being bussed from Prince Rupert because of Terrace weather will in- crease over the Christmas travel period. ‘That’s when our pas- © PERFORMA.
