B16 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 29, 1998 Hockey school boasts new format THERE’S GOING to be some big changes to the format of Terrace’s annual summer hockey school. This: year the school will become more like a camp, offering dry land training and recreational games in addition lo the twice- a-day on-ice activitics. “It gives the participants a complete day,’ says organizer Cliff Sharples. ‘‘It’s really a summer camp now. Each session will be a little over six hours.’’ The hockey school organizers have al- ways worked on a voluntary basis. But this year the city’s recreation department asked togetinvolved, “They asked and we said yes right away,’? Sharples says. ‘It rounds out the day.”” The daily activities will last about six hours and will include ice time in the morn- ing, followed by recreational activities like basketball, soccer, baseball and football, “That will allow downtime,’ Sharples says. After that will be dry land training, which will focus on agilily, flexibility, muscular strength and endurance and cardiovascular conditioning. The day will finish up with more ice time. As usual, the school will take place dur- ing the last two weeks of August. Jeff Shar- ples and Wade Flaherty wil! be returning for their 11th year as instructors. Last year about 230 players attended the hockey school. Application forms will be available once final arrangements are made, For more information call Pat at 635-2537 or Cliff at 635-7822.
