Ted has been judg- "ing this competition since its in- ception four years ago. Ted was doing a weekly jazz show on CJFW when Stephanie . Webber asked him if he'd like to judge the country music com- petition. Ted is still doing his jazz program seven years and 250 shows after he started (when CJFW first went on the air). Ted. has also been involved in the Northwest Music Festival for the past seven years, doing thrice- daily radio reports of winners in the different music festival events. , Taylor, an avid and active musician for 25 years, studied ‘privately with an instructor from the Berlin Academy of Music. His current project is a song for a niece getting mar- ried on May 19, written for a 10-piece back-up band. He says, “Some real great people are go- ing to do it with me.” They will tape the music and lyrics for presentation at the wedding reception. . “It surprises me the amount and quality of talent we have with such a small population, This is largely due to people like Jim Ryan (music and band leader), Terrace doesn’t have to ‘take a back seat in the music , scene,’’ Taylor says. The only time in his life that ‘Ted found music to be Ted Taylor? somewhat of a detriment was when he joined the Air Force during World War II. Because of his musical background, he was hired as a band member/leader. The less ex- perienced band members prac- tised day in and day out, with Ted and a few of the other ex- perienced musicians becoming proficient pool and table tennis players, when they weren’t prac- tising. Ted became a navigator in the Air Force, but never saw action because the Armed Forces need- ed his musical expertise and navigational training skills at home, | Ted Taylor and his wife first came to Terrace in 1971 from Vancouver to provide consulta- tion to owners of a chain of men’s clothing stores. After determining that Terrace was 2 place they'd like to stay, the Taylors bought then-Don’s Men’s. Wear and re-named it Taylor’s Men’s Wear. Ted ran that for a number of years. Then he managed the music depart- ment of Sight and Sound, and later moved on to Tillicum Key- boards. Now that he’s semi-retired from the business world, Ted Taylor, 76, has the time, energy and expertise to dabble in music again, In the Country Music Talent Search finals this year, four of the five judges were musicians, which really improves: the quali- ty of judging, says Taylor. He feels that a singer like Kathy Hanson doesn’t happen too fre- quently. ‘‘She has a great stage presentation and a_ beautiful voice, full of rhythm. Best quali- ty voice I’ve heard in a long time. She can acquit herself in any competition.” Taylor explains that each judge independently assesses each contestant. Ted would like to see a meeting of minds, though, on judging criteria (which would have to come from a provincial or national level) by the sponsor Budweiser. The highest score of the five judges Ted Taylor is a man of many talents - from music to the military to men’s wear - and back to music. But you can't judge a book solely by its cover. Maurice may be ugly, but he’s really an okay guy.
