THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER MEMBERSHIP ASSESSED $4.00 MONTHLY AS Local 1-71 IWA (the Loggers’ Local) has taken on the giant Eurocan Pulp & Paper Com- pany in an all out fight to win the base pulp wage rate and working conditions for its log- gers employed at Kitimat and Kemano. The operation which employs approximately 160 workers was struck September 2nd, follow- ing the Company’s refusal to meet the Union’s contract demands. Anticipating the possibility of a strike, the officers requested a $4.00 monthly assessment from the Local’s members to augment the regular Strike Fund relief. This was approved by over 82% of the membership in a referen- dum ballot and guarantees that the Company can’t starve the strikers into a poor settlement. The Union’s demands include: Free room and board. An improved fare clause. A supplement to the agreement on min- imum crew sizes plus a number of other contract improvements. @® The Pulp base rate of $3.20 an hour. @ The Pulp tradesmen’s rate of $4.35 an hour. @ A wage increase of 20 cents an hour effective January ist, 1970. ) paniraet expiry date of September 14, ® Complete contractor and sub-contractor clause.
