URGES ACTION ON COST OF LIVING Repeal the sales tax, says Rush ‘The five percent sales tax should be repealed because it is a wholly unjust and unequal tax which puts an unfair burden ~ on consumers and completely violates the principle of ‘taxa- tion according to ability topay’.” This was the proposal put for- ward at an all-candidate rally in the North Vancouver Com- munity Centre last Thursday by Maurice Rush, Communist candi- date for North Van-Seymour. Rush charged that the Socred governn.ent has surpassed all previous provincial administra- tions in creating a tax structure which imposes heavy taxes on the consuming public and lets the big corporations get off easily. He said the current provincial budget draws 41.8 percent of its revenues from direct taxes on consumers, “At the top of this list is the sales tax, but there if also the motor fuel tax, liquor tax, and motor vehicle licences.” Rush said that the Socred gov- ernment heavily favors big busi- ness in its taxation policy. He gave the example that only nine percent of B.C.’s income is de- rived from the forest and land . resources. He charged that one forest company, McMillan- Bloedel and Powell River, makes a net profit each year which equals the total provincial Cigarette prices are ex- pected to go up this week following the action of the Imperial Tobacco Co., last weekend in boosting cigarette prices to wholesalers. revenue from the whole forest industry. The Communist candidate urged that the tax structure be revised so that companies ex- ploiting the province’s natural resources be obliged to contri- bute a major share of provincial revenues with which to finance greater aid to education and social legislation, _“We must put an end to big TRAVEL 2643 East Hastings Street, Planning a trip?
