It would have been the one carrying two women who, after the vehicle stopped, would have . jumped out to take a picture of a house. Mect Yvonne Moen and Helen Haslmeyer who spent the carly part of the summer tracking down pictures of and stories be- hind the city’s remaining first homes and places of business. They had first thought they'd find perhaps 20, but were sur- prised the more they researched. “We hit 30, then over 30 and went up from there,” said Moen of the 60 homes the pair eventually encountered. And they know there still others they haven't yet heard about. Word spread of their work and that, coupled with interviews, of long term residents, added to their pictorial inventory. ‘We even have a mystery home, too. It’s something on which we have no information,’ added Moen. As their motto, the pair took a quote from city founder George Little — ‘You can’t get ahead in life until you have a nest.’* The idea of collecting photos and information on first homes came from a Hasimeyer had with some tourists at Heritage Park where she works. They wanted in- formation on a particular house. She and Moen then quickly realized the intriguing pos- sibilities of putting gathering to- gether pictures and stories of older homes and got to work. Their work has been collected on posters which are on display - this week at Video Stop. Each picture is accompanied by the story behind the house. What Moen and Haslmeyer find interesting is that some of the older-homes no longer bear a resemblance” to ‘their’ original’ * shape and size because of ex- tensive renovations done over conversation” _the years. They also painslakingly pieced together the new locations for homes which ofice occupied the block of Lakelse Ave, now con- "taining the Coast Inn of the West east to the Bank of Nova Scotia. In setting up guidelines for their quest, the pair established 1940 as the cut off date. “After that weze the war years ‘and that’s a totally different story because of the boom in war time buildings,”’ said Moen. “Putting together that could be a job for somebody else.”’ Haslmeyer has carefully scanned in their photos onto - their compuler and also has an ~ electronic version of the lext. She and Moen eventually plan to publish a version of their re- search. With thal in mind, they wel- come any more _ people might, have on pre- -1940 buildings i in own.
