B12 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 16, 1997 OUR CALEDONIA badminton players are the 1997 Northwest Zone champions. Cal squad smashes to success at CALEDONIA HAS a long tradition of suc- cess in badminton and this year certainly proved to be no exception. The birdie squad was in Victoria two weekends ago for the Provincial Championships, ending a season which be- gan last November. Unfortunately, an early loss knocked the team out of the championship round, but the team rallied to win the consolation finals —- ending up ninth in the province. ‘They really could not have played any betler,”’ says Robert Cooper, who, along with Dave Comfort, has coached the Cal squad for 13 years. ‘‘We just-had an un- fortunate first game when the kids were a little nervous.”’ ; That loss put Cal into the consolation finals, where the best they could finish was ninth, even though they ended up beating the eighth place team three of four games. Cooper says his team, consisting of six boys and six girls, played so well as a whole that he hates to single out any indi- vidual efforts. But he also says the outstanding per- formances of the two doubles teams deserves recognition. The boys’ doubles team of grade 12 stu- provincials dent Kosta Kollias and grade 11 Lina Osorio won 11 out of their 12 matches. And the girls’ doubles team of Victoria Chemko and Rhonda Freeman proved to be unstoppable. The girls left the tournament undefeated alter 10 games. ‘It was just tremendous,’’ Cooper says. ‘Both performances were simply ovistand- ing.’’ . In fact, Cal seems to have an outstanding badminton team just about every year. The secondary: schoo] has won the Zone Championships every year since 1984, fin- ished as high as second in the province and only once finished In less than twelfth place provincially. , ‘“Our kids can compete at a provincial level partly because of the adult club and also because of the strong Junior program,’’ says Cooper. ‘‘Mike Wilson from Thornhill and various teachers from Skeena have all contributed greatly to the program.” And: Cooper says with eight of the 12 team members returning next year, the squad could be a powerhouse. ‘fm confident we will be in the top eight,’’ Cooper says. ‘This is an outstand- ing group of athletes.” scope Sports swap ALL KINDS of sports equipment is going to be up for grabs on the firt weckend of May, The Canadian Ski Patrol - and Shames Mountain Ski Club will be holding a sports swap at the Terrace Arena May 2 and 3.
