A2 Terrace Review — Wednesday, June 26, 1991 WE CARE. That was the motto of last week's Law Enforcement Torch Run. The event, organized . throughout B.C. to promote awareness of law enforcement activities and to raise money for B.C. Special Olympics, drew 25 participants in Terrace and raised over $1,000 for Special Olympics. . Torch Run collects $1,000 The evening of June 18 saw the Terrace portion of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Run successfully concluded with sun- shine, congratulations and generous donations all round. Cst. Jane Andrew says the run raised over $1,000 for Special Olympics. Several Special Olympics athletes and 25 law enforcement officers — regular and auxiliary RCMP members, sheriffs and crown counsels — participated in the first section of the 16-kilometre run from New Remo to City Hall and more joined them on the final leg to the first rest stop east of town in Thornhill. At City Hall, alderman Darryl Laurent proclaimed Law Enforce- ment Week in Terrace. Special Olympics co-ordinator Joan Cox introduced all the Special Olympic athletes present in floor hockey, bowling and swimming. Organizers Jane Andrew and David -Cramm were. presented with bouquets of flowers for all their efforts by Special Olympians Silas Clayton and Dale Brown. . From city hall, all the partici- pants proceeded at a brisk pace to herrace McDonald’s Restaurant where McDonald’s representative Steve McKeddie presented a cheque for $213 to the Special Olympics. The money had been raised through the sale, by RCMP officers, of 272 Big Macs, Fifty cents from each Big Mac was donated to Special Olympics and further money came from the Donation House on the front counter at McDonald's. LIBRARY TALKS BEGIN The question of a Terrace Public Library expansion is expected to be presented in the form of a refer- endum in November. but the pro- cess of getting there seems to be moving at a snail’s pace. It was several months ago that city council said a referendum couldn’t take place until the issue of cost sharing with the greater . Terrace area could be resolved. According to council, rural library use has increased significantly but under the current cost-sharing agreement rural users are paying far less than they should. After a long period of silence, the first city-regional district meet- ing on the cost-sharing issue final- ly tock place recently behind closed doors. Regional district director Les Watmough says both he and fellow director Sandy Sand- hals agreed at that meeting that the D , 4535 Greig Avenue, Terrace, B.C, V8G 1M7 _ Seniors in Terrace and District $30.00 ~. Seniors outside of Terrace and District $33.00 me, Out of Canada $100.00 shortcomings of the current cost- shariig formula need to be addressed. "We need a sharing agreement that is fair for every- body," says Watmough. The process of developing a new formula, though, could take longer than it took to get to the first meeting where it was agreed that a new formula is needed. Watmough says usage, costs and charges have to be reviewed. But even if that work is completed in time, the regional district wants to see firm plans and better cost estimates on the library expansion proposal before they agree to a referendum. Asked if all this can be done in time for a November referendum, Watmough said, "I think we can barely squeak through," but added, "The library board, the architect and city council have some work to do first."
