The first part of the ex- change began on Feb. 24 when 14 Lindsay forestry students visited the Northwest: - ° The schedule was still tenta- tive but Hazelton NWCC forest- - Ty instructor Shane Campbell said plans included a visit to the Prince Rupert area to ex- amine coastal forests and eco- systems; tours of Westar’s Car- naby sawmill, Terrace logging operations and interior forests and ecosystems; and a.tour of Kitimat’s salmon hatchery and Eurocan pulp mill. He added that time would also be set aside for recreation and culture. Ac- cording to Campbell, they hoped to have the Ontario stu- dents spend a day at Hudson Bay Mountain and a few hours at K’San Village in Hazelton. Campbell says Hazelton stu- dents will then be offered a similar schedule in Ontario, Sir Sanford Flemming’s Lindsay campus is about a 1-% hour four hour drive from Ottawa. It’s located in the heart of the | Ontario forestry region and, ac- cording to NWCC president Don Anderson, is probably one of the best récognized forestry schools in Canada. During their week there, Hazelton students will view different silvaculture practices and operations, ex- amine Ontario-style forest man- agement, and tour hardwood plantations and sawmills. Campbell adds that the schedule will also include a trip to Ottawa and possibly a meeting with Skeena MP Jim Fulton. Campbell says the exchange visit was put together rather - quickly. Because only five Hazelton students were available for the trip, another seven col- lege forestry students from the Nicola Valley Institute of Tech- nology in Merritt will be travell- ing to Ontario with them. In the future, though, this non- regional type of sharing may not be required.
