{BAKER'S BATTER ‘.» Sewers,’* Watmough complained, BY NIXON BAKER The public squabbling between Kitimat an Terrace was interesting for a short period of time, but surely the fun is over anditis becoming an embarrassment and a nuisance. lam assured that the situation is not as bad in private discussions as it appears in public but that is little consolation, since it is the public pronouncements which the public hear. At Saturday’s regional district council meeting a reques! was received from the ministry of economic development for -nformation con. cerning the Kitimat-Stikine regional district. Apparently the ministry had requested Chambers of Commerce fo supply certain in- formation, which the Terrace chamber had not lone. -, Dlrector Vic Jolliffe asked that the regional district supply ail the information requested. Mayor George Thom of Kitimat ([umped in quickly to add, ‘‘great, maybe we should all get the regional district to do our work, which is ’ what Terrace wants.” Jolliffe noted that the request had nof been sent to the District of Terrace but to the Chamber of Commerce and if the ministry wanted to do business with Chambers of Com- merce rather than elected bodies he was not responsible for answering any inquiries. Thom pointed out that Kitimat was able to respond without help from the regional district. To conclude the discussion, after severa! other barbs were exchanged, planner Peter Campbell explained that this particular request was ad- ‘dressed to him as regional planner and all he needed was a simple motion to provide the ‘” requested information. The motion was even- tually passed, ' Later in the meeting Director Les Watmough of Thornhill comptained about a press release from the provincial government announcing the approval of a sewage system somewhere in the lower maintand. “They certainly don’t publicize the fact that they turned down Thornhiil’s request for Jolliffe suggested that if the director wanted publicity all he had to do was contact local media and he would get it. “You have to work at it,” Jolliffe sald. _ “Imagine Terrace telling someone else to get off their ass and do something,’’ Mayor Thom inter|ected. Cute eh? if it wasn't for Banyay keeping a firm control on the meeting this type of argument could goon all day. _ Alright Mayor Thom, you made your point regarding the health centre, the provincial government has given a flat unéquivical ‘No’ to yoUr suggestion, so'let’s forget if and'geton with, business. ‘Speaking of regianal cauncil—why ‘is it that politicians at any level expect the news media to be mind readers, which is what they must expect considering the fact that they do not supply copies of committee reports to the press. _ At one point on Saturday Director Alice Chen- Wing asked acting chairman Frank Armitage ‘about the rental of a car for reglonal district use. Armitage replied that the regional council was. renting a Lincoln Continental with plush purple. ‘seats. Funny? Maybe, except that since the ‘pressdid not have coples of the committee report which recorded the rental of a more reasonable vehicle; it would have been perfectly legitimate had ## been reported that regional council was renting a Lincoln. ‘Mad this report been carried. great crys of . (anguish would have been heard from regional ‘councillors. ; Political bodies in this area have been spoiled’ badly with a plethora of news coverage and they. have apparently grown accustomed to having _ the reporters make sure that the politicians do not make themselves look like foals in the media.. This appiles not only to regional council but ta other bodies, such as Terrace council. . Of course, the easy way out is to do what the school board does, hold your meetings at exactly the same filme as council so that many media people have to choose which meeting to cover. This generally results in the school board being ‘able to operate without the pressure of having ‘the reporters present. | This fact may explain why there is so little interest in the up-coming schoo! board election; a situation which | presume is perfectly fine with those people who are Incumbents. Another house under YOUNG * It seems that the patient is no more, The man or woman who consults a physician has been replaced by something called a ‘health care con- sumer’. This term, aside from being an example of inaccurate use of language ~ ‘sickness care consumer’ ig marginally better — almost implies that the ill person is guilty of using up a resource. This is one of the examples of the depersonalization of medicine mentioned by Dr.Robert H Moser at a recent meeting of the American Medical Writers Association. Dr. Moser is the Executive Vice President of the American College of Physicians, and! his talk exploredsome of the difficulties that may be encountered in trying to provide compassionate, personal, and effective medical care. Many of his observations apply io BC. Part of the problem is the - advent of prepaid medical eare plans, particularly government operated plans. ‘These agencies, because of their size (it is not my intent ot be critical of our medical or hospital insurance plansi(, TEND TO ‘BECOME IMPERSONAL. The government, because it pays the bills, becomes the ‘provider of health care. Instead of seeing his or her doctor, the patient ‘enlers the health care del -ery system’ and-naturally then becomes a ‘health care consumer’! ; the How can this affect you as @ patient or potential patient? One thing that does occur is that the provider of health care will, correctly, wish lo keep costs to a minimum, This can be done by making entry intu the system more difficuit provide fewer doctors, fewer hospital beds, fewer x-ray and laboratory services. Consumption of the health care dollar-can also be decreased if peuple take better care of themseives. The Individual motivation required is a major stum- bling block.
