No Place for Unions

BOMBAY (CP) — "There
is no place here for labor
organizations. You are all
Communist agents who
deserve to be thrown into the
sea or executed.”

These hareh words were
spoken by an Arab govern-
ment official to a group of
Indian, Pakistani and other
Asian workers employed on
a giant construction project
in the sultanate of Muscat
and Oman in the Middle
East,

The official was reacting
to demands for regular
working hours, overtime

wages and better living
conditions for the 4,-000
people working on the proj-
ec

Several Indians have been
asked to leave the wealthy
sultanate at short notice on
the charge of “inciting labor
unrest,””

EXPELLED FOR
PROTESTS

- Eruvat Shekhar, a 31-year-
old Indian technician, told-
The Times of India, Bom-
bay’s leading English-
language newspaper, that he
was expelled for protesting
regulations requiring
workers to work even up to
16 hours a day if labor

contractors wanted them to
do 80.

The Times said It had also
received complaints from
Asians in other Arab sheik-
doms about harsh working
conditions for immigrants.

Tens of thousands of In-
dians, Pakistanis and other
Asians have been recruited
for industrial projects in the
Middle East, Every month
millions of dollars are being
sent by the immigrants to
their home countries,
helping to boost the domestic
economies.

Indian press reports allege
that most of the Indians
working in Arab sheikdoms

are nothing more than

“reasonably well-paid slaves
and bonded laborers."

The Times recently
reported that 2,600 Indian
workers were sent to prison
in Muscat and Oman when
they protested nonpayment
of overtime wages.

Ironically, the modern
prison had just been built by
the Indians themselves.

Let each religion: play the
role of a flower. Let us make
a garland of these divine
flowers and offer them at the
Feet of God. God will be
pleased. We shall be
fulfilled
