IWA defended the rights of work- ers, and who have laboured for the security and welfare of all people. “May it always stand as a symbol of our dedication, to protect: and strengthen our - democratic institutions, to se- cure full recognition and en- joyment of the rights and liberties to which we are just- ly entitled, and.to preserve and perpetuate the cherished traditions of democracy.” Following the ceremony, approximately 500 visitors filed through the building ad- miring the ingenious manner in which the architects con- trived to blend the design of the building with the lovely wooded park adjacent to it so that both complimented each other. Constructed at a cost of $100,000,. the building has on the main floor, five offices measuring 14 ft. by 16 ft. each. There is also a general office 28 ft. by 16 ft., a work ‘room 14 ft. by 16 ft. and a magnificent boardroom 28 ft. by 16 ft. Great care was taken by the Local officers to ensure (subject to the Alberni build- ing code) that as much B.C. THE WESTERN CANADIAN LUMBER WORKER "BUILDING" wood as possible was used in construction. All the offices feature local cedar and hem- lock panelling with matching wood furniture. The lower floor contains the main assembly hall 60 ft. by 40 ft. in size with a seating capacity for approximately 300. The floor of the hall is unique in that it has a special synthetic covering known as Torginal which is both beauti- ful and functional and is guaranteed to last the life time of the building. ° The lower floor also con- tains a lovely coffee lounge and kitchen and the necessary equipment needed for cooking during social affairs. The rest of the lower floor area is taken up with the furnace room, storage room and wash- rooms. The building is heated by an oil fired hot water system and each office has individual controls which provide a com- bination heating and air con- ditioning system. The building’s architects were Peterson & Lester, Vic- toria, and the contractors were Danze & Franco of Port Alberni.
