Joining hands with peace marchers across Canada, the U.S. and around the world in the International Day of Protest. April 27th, more than 2,000 people gathered at the City Hall and paraded through city streets to the Courthouse where they were joined by hundreds more to stage the giant rally against the U.S. war in Vietnam. The call for Canada to act for peace came at the conclusion of the rally when the meeting unanimously endorsed the demands made in a large newspaper advertisement published by the B.C. University Teachers Committee of Vietnam. In an Open Letter to Prime Minister Trudeau, the ‘‘new leaders in Ottawa’’ were urged to take these “new actions aimed at peace in Vietnam.” @ Cease activities, such as the shipment of war materials to the U.S., which prevents Canada from effectively carrying out her role asa member of the ICC (International . Control Commission) and as a. mediator in this conflict. e Urge the U.S. government immediately and unconditionally to cease bombing ALL of North and South Vietnam. e Call for an end to all offensive military actions in South Vietnam that jeopardize the present possibilities to end the war. e Urge the early implementation of the commitment to withdraw all U.S. troops from South Vietnam as a necessary step to the establishment “4 of permanent peace. Joined by contingents from the Fraser Valley, Victoria and Nanaimo, the marchers carried placards which urged: ‘‘Stop the U.S. War in Vietnam,” ‘‘Honor the Geneva Agreement,”’? U.S. Aggressors — Get Out of Vietnam,”’ “Stop Bombing in Vietnam,’’ ‘‘A Canadian Foreign Policy for Canada,”’ ‘“Canada Must Speak Out Now,” ‘‘End Canadian Complicity.” A leaflet widely distributed by the Vancouver Committee of the Communist Party entitled ‘‘For a Greater Peace Effort,’’ said: ‘‘It would be fatal for the peace forces to assume the U.S. aggressors have suddenly recognized the immorality of their actions and decided to end the war. “They would rather endanger the future of humanity through nuclear war than allow an enroachment on their war profits or ‘permit’ the Vietnamese people the right to run their own affairs. This is illustrated by U.S. evasion over the site for the preliminary peace talks.
