And° this little, story.this week is remembering one of those ° , families. Granddaughter Roxy Lee _ wanted to do something to remember her grandmother Helen Dempster for friends in Terrace. She wanted to share a special celebration that was held by the fam- ily earlier in Abbotsford. A 90th birthday party for her grandmother Helen Demp- ster, with a fifth generation present. The special celebration -was held Sept. 30, 2004, but Roxy Lee still felt it was something special to share of her grandmother and to say she is still doing just fine. Clifford, and Helen Dempster and their four — children, Gerald, Marlene, Reg, and Helen, moved to Terrace in 1951 from Rocky _ Mountain House, Alberta. They first lived on Agar Avenue and built a house there. But due to a problem in getting a title for the land - on Agar, they moved the house to Molitor: Avenue. Once they were established there, they developed a large garden with vegetables, fruit and lots of sweet peas — they loved sweet-peas. Clifford Robert David Dempster was born July 8, 1909 in New Liscard, On- tario. Helen Elenor — nee — Wayman was born Sept 30, 1914 ina place called Frisco, about 10 miles out of Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Clifford and Helen. were married at Rocky Mountain House and.moved to Red Deer, Alberta where Gerry and Marlene were born. Son Reg was born in Bulcan, Al- berta in 1941; being the war years, Mr. Dempster was there building hangers for - . the military at the airport. While living in Terrace, Mr. Dempster worked for CNR, was a Cat Skinner in. the woods and worked on the survey crew for the government. A picnic shelter there will be dedicated to Dick Green ‘Sr., a long time Lion who passed away three years ago. “He was the. president, ‘treasurer, secretary —- you ‘name it — over the years,” re- ‘members fellow Lion Dave “Maroney. “And he kept scrapbooks ‘of the club’s history and of ‘anything we did.” Green was a draughtsman - for the city and also worked for the regional district. Green designed several buildings in town, includ- ing the Almarlin Building on the corner of Lazelle and Eby and the former Terrace Equipment building. Having the picnic shelter HERE ‘N THERE YVONNE MOEN Helen made the move to Ab- botsford, B.C. in 1971 be- cause of illness. Helen Dempster worked for Gerry Duffus in the Five to Dollar Store on Kalum Street and she retired from. the McCleods Store as the ‘ bookkeeper. Helen was an avid curler; so many curl-. ers like Jan MacKinnon and others will remember her from the curling rink. Clifford: Dempster also was involved in curling and ‘both Clifford and : Helen were legion members and Clifford worked part time at the legion slinging beer. At the celebration, the five that made the fifth gen- eration were: grandmother Helen Dempster, her son Gerald, his daughter Roxy Lee, and Roxy Lee’s grand- son Triston. Grandma Hel- en, and great-great-grandson Tristan share their birthday. Tristan Michael was born on Sept. 30, 1999. And on Helen’s 90th birthday, Tristan celebrated his sixth birthday. Helen’s son Reg and wife ‘Lorraine still live in Ter- race, Gerry in Fraser Lake; daughter Helen in Abbots- ford, daughter Marlene de- ceased. And Clifford Demp- ster passed away April 16, 1980. - ’ Helen’s granddaughter Roxy Lee did her school- - ing in Terrace and is now. working at the George Little house, the new Via Rail Sta- tion in Terrace.
