# A2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 16, 2005 _ Jobless rate creeps up > _ but that’s no surprise THE NORTHWEST : unemployment rate rose in January. ending a months- long:gradual decline. But the hike to 9.7 per cent from December 2004’s.8.7 per cent didn’t’. surprise Terrace-based federal employ- ment analyst Patrick McIntyre who . said a slowdown after Christmas was expected. 8 “It’s. not at all untypical. It’s re- ‘ally quite small. We've had a few good months. There’s nothing ‘bad to Tead into it,” he said in looking at the fig- ures. Mcintyre noted the January 2005 rate is better than January 2004 when | unemployment stood at 13.3 per cent | for the area from the Queen Charlotte Islands to Vanderhoof, When looking at the area, McIntyre re said it seems there is more’ employ- | ment at the eastern end than toward the. coast. “Terrace and Kitimat El starts have gone up. Any improvements we’re see- ing are not around here,” he said. McIntyre did say the population de- cline of the past years’ seems to have stopped. The population this January was “fisted at 71,400 compared to 71.500 a year ago. The labour force of people over the age of 15 was listed at 50,700 this January, an increase over the Jafiu- cary 2004 figure of 50,300. Total employment j in January 2005 was listed at 45,800 people. more than the January 200-4 figure of 43,600. “What we're seeing is the labour force being the same size as last year, but there’s overall better employment,” said McIntyre. ~The number of full time worker rs dropped from 34,500 in December 2004 to 33,200 in January. But the number of part lime workers rose to 12,600 in January from 11.800 in December. MclIntyre said the rise in part time employment appears to affect’ mostly women who had been working full time. Based on historical trends, McIntyre wouldn't be surprised if the jobless rate _ inches up over the next while. | think it will be fairly steady but I do‘ihink we'll see unemploy ment in the 10 per cent range for'a few months,” he said. - The provincial unemployment rate. , stood at 6.3 per cent in.
