Lest your education be incomplete, I'll point out to you a Slatcment by reporter Jeff Nagel which well illustrates. a maxim J leamed at my father’s knee: ‘'Son, don’t belicve everything you read in the newspapers,’’ : Reporter Nagel wrote of Councillor Gordon Hull: ‘‘He also needs to be wary of issues of moralily-such as the ¢s- cort issue - which threatened to suck him into-the vortex: of..... Bill Vander Zalm-style church and state politics,” You might ask yourself, why does Gordon Hull need to be wary of morality? Isn’t that what the government is all about? Don’t we entrust our government representatives with the sacred. responsibility of minimizing evil? And isn't it evil thal a woman can sell her body with the bless- ings of Terrace City Council? The more perceptive of you students may also ask whal was it about Bill Vander Zalm that warrants his being portrayed so negatively? Frankly, sludents, Bill Vander Zalm was not the great Catholic here he could have been. Had Mr. Vander Zalm feared God more than he apparently loved Mammon, he Hey drivers. We are speak- ing of all the folks you see munning the highways and by ways in and around Ter- race, There are a good num- ber of recreational runners, joggers and walkers. We ap- plaud you. For cight months a group of us have been training for the Vancouver Marathon — a 26-mile race in May. We're training 40, 50, 60 aking up to four hours, nearer the race day. Physi- cally and mentally demand- ing, ilis a real challenge. Then there is the ever so present elements of weather and road conditions. Many winter days we have no choice but to run on the fac- simile of the ‘shoulder’ and are often forced to iump into a snow drift to avoid a motorist. They often look the other way, In winter sidewalks are and slippery. We have fal- len, and find ourselves now running more on the edge of the road for safety, It only takes a second for vehicles to slow dawn a bit, making it safer for every- one, Darting to the middle of the road without slowing down only sprays pedestrians with whatever is on the road — ice, slush, snow, gravel ete, footing, pace,. breathing properly, distance etc. We are’ exireincly aware of motorists and do our best to be — considerate. © Maybe you've noticed a smilé or a wave of appreciation? It never fails. It’s one thing or another. I can see this where you have traffic lights, plus school zones, but to put this out on the road just to get some poor driver going 20 clicks over the limit is a cheap, revenue grabber. On the road we pet a tolerance level and you might get a warning if you treat the police officer in a respeciful way. But a microchip docsn’l have human feelings.
