12 Terrace Review — Wednesday, July 29, 1987 First ground broken | bandshell site _ at Jim Ryan turned first soil for the community bandshell project with a gold plated shovel on July 19, while Performing a . Arts Shell Society members Ken Morton, Les Annandale, acting Ma i Tuming sod | yor Bob Jackman and Gord Shaben look on. TERRACE — Fifteen years ago, ' Terrace residents were told they. would: have a bandshell in George Little Memorial Park. But everyone knows that never happened. Last winter, there was renew- _’ ed talk of a bandshell in the park, but those plans soon ‘be- came lost in more ambitious plans to expand the swimming . pool. ; Better pool facilities were con- sidered by some officials to be of ‘| greater importance to the com- ' munity, and the project soon ab- sorbed funds slated for the | bandshell, Again, the shell seem- | ed to be forgotten. . Forgotten, that is, by most people except a dedicated-group of residents belonging to the Performing Arts Shell Society (PASS). They had been working towards the reality of a com- - munity bandshell for over three years and they didn’t forget. Spearheaded by the Terrace Musicians Association, Terrace Little Theatre joined PASS this spring. With their help, gener- ous donations and many hard- working volunteers, PASS wit-- nessed the beginnings of a dream come true when Jim Ryan turn- ed the first piece of sod in an of- fical ceremony at George Little Memorial Park at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 19, Ryan, President of PASS and founder of the Terrace Com- munity Band was joined in the ceremony by Freeman of the Ci- ty, Vesta Douglas, Acting May- or Bob Jackman, Ken Morton from Terrace Little Theatre, and Les Annondale and Gord Shaben of the Terrace Musicians Association. -As Ryan broke first soil, he predicted, “There will be some great entertainment going on out here in our great outdoors!’ Following the official cere- - mony, Ryan added, ‘It’s cer- tainly a necessary facility. We've grown into it and we've had a lot of volunteer help — people that have expressed a desire to pitch inandhelp.” Bob Jackman described the completed project as a ..“‘real community focal point’’ for musicians, theatre groups, The Revival Band of Terrace gave a festive air to the offictal bandshell sod turning with a free concert for Terrace residents, 2 preview of the type of entertainment that will be available when the bandshell is completed. Band members are Wayne Miller, vocal and lead’ guitar; Eddie Trelenberg, bass guitar; and Dick Ladouceur on drums. dancers and multicultural groups. ; . ‘Anyone who really wants to use the shell will get an oppor- tunity to do so,’’ he said. And Vesta Douglas, with a charm that only she can project, endorsed the project 100 percent by saying simply, “I’m de- lighted. I think we have pro- jected in the past the fact that we do appreciate the arts, and if we support this bandshell it will be an asset. And anything that is an asset to Terrace — sits very well with Vesta Douglas.’’ Jim- Ryan described the com- pleted bandshell as a covered structure, with a stage 38 feet wide and 25 feet deep (only 130 square feet smaller than the REM Lee Theatre stage) and with access by stairs on one side and a ramp on the other. He said the shell will also in- clude covered privacy areas for performers, with screened off sections on either side of the Stage and, if electricity is available, it will be a year round facility. According to Bob Jackman, PASS has already made an ap- Plication for a lottery grant through the Terrace Arts Coun- cil to cover one third of the estimated $48,000 cost, and they are asking the community to help with the balance, $4,000 worth of donations have already been made for engineering and design work by Alan Soutar and John Morgan, and the society will be looking for donated back-hoes, carpen- ters and electricians,’’ he said. Les Annandale added that the society expected a positive reac- tion from the community with § fund raising campaigns such as their “‘Brick Shares’’. “We'll have people with ‘| pledge sheets around and you get a card stating that you donated so many bricks towards & the building of the shell,’’ he ex- plained, “The money is the important part,’” said Annondale. “To. J keep the money rolling so we can keep the project going’’. A festive air permeated the day, and the official sod turning was followed by an open air con- cert in the park, Music was pro- vided by ‘“‘The Revival Band’’ featuring Wayne Miller, Eddie Trelenberg and Dick Ladouceur. An appreciative audience gathered in the shade of trees, ._ while surveyors went right to work laying out the corners of | the bandshell, Ryan said the society hopes to at least have the floor of the bandshell ready for Riverboat .
