Vol. XXXII, No. 8 VANCOUVER, B.C. 5c PER COPY : —e* spel, 1966 April, 1966 STRIKE VOTE NECESSARY “Only a decisive strike vote will ensure continued and worthwhile negotiations.” This was the unanimous decision of the IWA Coast Negotiating Committee when notified that the Conciliation Officer had recommended only that no Conciliation Board be appointed. Ballots, with explanatory bulletins, were immediately issued to the eight local unions involved. May 25th was set as the deadline date for tabulation. The employers publicly announced that government supervision of the voting would not be requested. This makes it imperative that every single operation should record a solid “yes” vote, otherwise the total vote might be questioned later, by some employers. “IWA members must now register, by means of a strike vote, an emphatic demand for a more satisfactory contract OR agree to live with the existing contract,” announced Jack Moore, Spokes- man for the committee. The situation was created by the stubborn refusal of the employers’ representatives to start bargaining. “The gulf between the union and the operators is as wide now as at the start of bargaining talks. All our demands have nothing to vote on, Jack Moore said: met with outright opposition by the employers. All their pro- mF “It is true that at present there are no settlement terms to ei aan meant to water down existing contract benefits,” accept or reject. That’s the fault of the employers. It is equally said Moore. See “STRIKE VOTE” — Page 3 is the best and only means to get genuine bargaining on the part of the employers.” In reply to the employers’ jibe that IWA members have “K solid ‘yes’ vote authorizing strike action, if necessary, Your Negotiating Committee Unanimously Recommends... | —_ REFERENDUM BALLOT a 1966 (VO [ “ay ™ACOAST INDUSTRY NEGOTIATIONS IL.W.A.
