SUZY BIRSTEIN continued from page Z Suzy Birstein has gained recognition for her colourful tableware and sculpture throughexhi bittons and commissions. Her work has had international and national exposure il the Gardiner Muscum in To- ronto, Whatcom County Museum in Wash- ington State, and the Biennale of Ceramics in Troi Ruvveres, Quebec. Locally she has exhibited in one-person shows at the Sur- rey Art Centre, Vancouver Community Arts Council Gallery and the Gallery of BC Ceramics, as well as several group shows. Her most popularexposure is atthe Tomata Cafe on Cambie Street where café lattes are served in her colourful one-al- kind bowls. Birstein’s influences are strongly rooted in indigenous cultures especially Africa, Indiaand Mexico, She graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Ant and Design With an honours diploma in ceramics and pnmilive art, Since then she has expanded her iconography and techniques through numerous Workshops in clay, papier mache, painting and koitwear design. A deep love for world music, jury and opera has inspired her forms and colours. Her travel expenences have further developed her chews. Birstein works and teaches from her gar- den studio in Kitsilano and is studying how ta play the accordion. She teaches clay and multimedia sculpture at Arts Um- brella and 13 an artist in residence in local elementary schools.
