_— B6 Terrace Review — - however, by Ed Ansems . King of the Mountain Footrace (July 29) Having known Smithers run- ner Richard Harrison for some time, we all realized that he was the favourite to win the 13th running of this Terrace event. The only runner in the past few years to give Richard a race for the title has been Terrace resi- dent Colin Parr, Parr’s best time over the Terrace Mountain Nature Trail was 35:33, set back in 1987. But this was bettered by Richard Harrison in 1988 with 35:29. The weather conditions were almost ideal — maybe on the warm side for some. A mid-course surge managed to give Richard the lead over Colin, which he held to the end. His time of 3:43 was a victory by 25 seconds and meant he had won the race for the sixth time in seven years. Prince Rupert’s Rose-Marie Cheer captured the open women’s side, but her time of 51:46 was off the female mark of 43:51 set back in 1985. This was her first attempt at ‘‘the Hill’, so future attempts look promising for a shot at the rec- ord. Other results saw master runner Ed Ansems (Terrace) place third overall; he was the first master at 41:12. Marilyn Earl (63:16) of Terrace won the masters women division. Dave ‘Edmonds (43:26) of Terrace placed first in the under-19 age group. Many of the remaining par- ticipants waged their own per- sonal battles. Some struggled to complete the 8K course, while Others tried to run the entire distance without having to stop. ‘The endless series of short hills, did take a few casualties, This year’s race attracted 40 runners — down from the 94 who entered a few years ago. Maybe the Northwest is losing its share of racers who want to — pretend they are as capable as any mountain goat in the area. Maybe the steep inclines and rocky surfaces are too much of an obstacle for all but a handful of hardy participants, Nevertheless, members of the Skeena Valley. Runners’ Club would welcome runners from around the province who -might: come to Terrace for an oppor- tunity to take part in a somewhat unusual race. Those of you who like hilly courses will find this race a challenge worth taking. Besides, we always like to place our best runners in a race with any newcomers to the ~— Wednesday, October 24, 1990 ~ Running in retrospect: — Skeena Valle area. It was fortunate that the... . -Tace did not start any earlier as some of the out-of-towners re- quired more than a few hours out of their sleeping bags before they were able to get their bodies moving. Some had camped out during the Fall Fair weekend, as the warm daytime weather in- spired that sort of activity. However, with clear nights the . temperatures dropped so much that ice formed on exposed water surfaces before morning. — Warming up in T-shirts and singlets was thus. difficult. Nevertheless, a record 72 run- ners from Prince Rupert to Burns Lake managed to prepare themselves for the two races. The slight downhill at the start of both races led to a first mile under 5:00 for Smithers runner Richard Harrison. He was close- ly followed by Terrace runners Colin Parr, Ed Ansems and Gord Buxton. Richard (32:47) continued to lead the race throughout and even managed to stretch his lead as the race progressed. A close battle for second emerged as Colin and Ed exchanged leads a number of times. The final 400m uphill took its toll on many runners, but in the race for second place, Colin (34:34) won by a second over the final few metres. Gord was fourth over the line in a time of 36:50. . In the women’s 10K, a close race developed as Terrace run- ner Diana Wood (43:23 and 24th overall) won over Kelli Maskie- wich (43:44) of Smithers. Susan Davies of Smithers was third ina time of 45:16. Other category winners were as follows: Junior Men — 1. David Shepherd (Terrace) 38:15; 2. Ted Conlon (Smithers) 39:25; 3. Cormac Hikisch (Telkwa) 42:30.. Masters Women — 1. Sue Holmes (Smithers) 51:06; 2. Rose Schibli (Terrace) 51:25; 3. Sandra Berry (Smithers) 62:28. Masters Men — 1. Ed Ansems (Terrace) 34:35; 2. Dave Allwood (New Hazelton) 38:34; 3.
