DAN RADFORD RETIRES 3 Very popular and widely known CLC official Dan Rad- ford was honored by 200 fel- low unionists at a party held July 27, at the Flame Supper Club, to mark his retirement from the labour movement after 49 years service. Dan, who held the position of B.C. Area Education Di- rector for Congress, first started work in the coal mines of Vancouver Island at the age of 12 years. He worked his way up in his union and became president of the United Mine Workers’ Union on the Island prior to coming to Vancouver in 1945. At that time he was appoint- ed an organizer for the Cana- dian Congress of Labor. Two years later he was appointed regional director of the Con- gress. With the merger of the TLC and CLC in 1956, he continued on the newly- merged staff and was subse- quently appointed to the job he held prior to his retire- ment. Dan was president of the B.C. Federation of Labour for a number of years where he worked diligently to build a bigger and better Federation. He has also represented la- bor on numerous committees, such as the UIC, Narcotics Foundation, Workmen’s Com- pensation, Safety, Health, Mining, Natural Resources and many others. CLC Area Director Tom Gooderham, who presented Dan and his wife, Lottie, with a color TV on behalf of those in attendance, stated in part: “Dan has been in the fore- front of many inter-union differences and problems, al- ways adhering strictly to the policies and principles of the Congress. He has been in the forefront fighting against such inequitous labor legislation as Bill 39, Bills 43 and 42, and now our most recent vicious anti-labor, Bill 33. “People in B.C. that have had the honor and pleasure of working and meeting with Dan, are going to miss his ‘down to earth’ views and opinions, his sage advice, his friendly good humor, his sin- cerity, and above all, his per- sonality, all of which has made him thousands of friends who I know are wish- ing him many years of con- tinuing good health to enjoy his leisure time. “Dan has made a magnifi- cent contribution to the im- provement of social and eco- nomic welfare for all the workers in B.C., and is de- serving of a well-earned rest from the continuing frustra- tions and pressures that are inherent in the work he has
