Did you know that the first set- tlers who arrived in Maillardville from all over Canada brought with them some very interesting customs which are today an integral part of Le Festival Du Bois? Tradition had it that during the winter, the men would leave their homes for months on end for vastly forested regions. There they would labour through the long cold months to provide for the families they had left behind. When the month of March arrive, the tired loggers would rejoice knowing that they would once again be reunited with their loved ones for “le temps des sucres”, which in essence was a time for celebration and enjoying maple syrup. In 1909 when these pioneers ar- rived in Maillardville, there were no maple trees from which came the sweet sap used to make maple syrup. Thus, the pioneers needed to improvise on the traditions that Spring brought with it. They decided instead to commem- iving M’ville history orate the end of their labour with a village-wide celebration. To day at le Festival du Bois, the Triathlon serves to remind us of how hard the pioneers worked in order to make our community what it is now.
