Alderman Keryluk expressed appreciation to former Mayor Campbell and Mrs. Campbell aud wished them both well. Alderman Keryluk extended congratulations to Mayor Laking and Aldermen Gates and Mabbett.- Alderman Keryluk then thanked his wife, Mary, and staff members for their support in 1979 and expressed -appréciation. to-the individuals iwho aided in his re-election. a Alderman Gates then addressed the meeting and. recognized candidates Alderman Mr. M. Charko and Mr. D. Vater. Alderman Gates then introduced members Gates - of his family. Alderman Gates expressed his appreciation to the people who helped him during his campaign and stated he is looking forward to serving the citizens of Port Coquitlam and will work hard on their behalf. INAUGURAL ADDRESS: Inaugural Mayor Laking addressed the meeting stating he has served the citizens Address ~ Mayor Laking of Port Coquitlam as Alderman for the last 12 years and has worked hard to bring forth what the citizens want. Mayor Laking stated he is looking , forward to the challenge of serving Port Coquitlam as Mayor. Mayor Laking stated in the future there will be some change in the community but that the changes will only be done after full consultation with Council members and staff to be sure when changes come they are good changes for the benefit of the citizens. Mayor Laking stated next year in 1980 one of the greatest challenges will be the question of transit, how, why and when and who is going to pay the bill, and to get some relief in the near future for the rush hour traffic. Mayor Laking stated he is looking forward to a year of challenge in industrial development. Mayor Laking advised Port Coquitlam has never had a problem with residential development but with the implementation of the Mary Hill Bypass tin Port Coquitlam the indication is that the City now holds one of the prime areas, in British Columbia and Mayor Laking advised he will.continue to work for industrial as well as commercial’ development which will increase employment in the area and cut down on the necessity for residents to commute. Mayor Laking stated he has worked on studies of the Coquitlam River and will continue to work to get the Coquitlam River upgraded. Mayor Laking stated the City will be working to upgrade the roads and work on a cost sharing program. Mayor Laking stated drainage and recreation will also be studied further in 1980.
