REPORT MAR 20 1978 TO: Mayor and Council March 17th, 1978 FROM: Building and Protection Committee Re: Library Construction Report The Building and Protection Committee met with Michael Wright and Mrs. Judith Nacht, representatives of the Friends of the Library, to discuss a Report prepared by the City Administrator on Future Library Construction. This Report was a follow-up to a Report submitted to Council last year from the Library Construction Committee. The Report is now conveyed to Council for consideration. The Committee reviewed the conclusions and recommendations in the Report and generally agrees with the outline. The Committee made the following comments in response to the Report: 1. The Committee agrees with the recommendation for siting contained in Item 6, on page 2 of the Report. The site being the northwest corner of the present Port Recreation Centre site on the south side of Wilson Avenue. 2. The Committee would like to see more Council discussion on the proposal to hold a referendum on the library question. This is contained in Itex 8, on page 2 of the Report. The Committee expressed some concern that it might be difficult to get a referendum passed. 3. With regard to timing, the Committee generally agreed with the proposals contained in Item 9, on page 3 of the Report and felt that a referendum in the Spring of 1980 would give ample time to plan a new building and do some promotional work. By this time we may also have more conclusive direction from the L.D.C. in terms of Grant structures, etc. fhe Committee also noted the comments about the need for increased bookstock at our present library and will be pursuing this, both at the Regional level and locally. ' The Committee would also like confirmation as to whether or not the Building Committee that was formed last year will continue to function to continue planning for this facility. The Committee is prepared to discuss the Report further with Council.
