It is a drama. that is primarily human in appeal, not set to music but with music as an entegral part of the series. The use of established ‘big star’ names has been deliberately avoided in favor of selecting players whose personality and ability fit the rales. The cast includes Eric Woofe as the elder Strauss, Anne Stallybrass as his wife and mother’ of the younger (Nikolas: Simmonds) and Eduard Strauss (Tony Anholt) also achieved success and therefore, are featured in the series. The first episode opens as Johann’s (the elder) carefree days of bachelorhood come to an abrupt end in 1824 through a elaudestine affair with Anna, daughter of a wealthy innkeeper. For Strauss, it is a passing affair, to be dropped when he ‘tires of her. But when she becomes pregnant, he faces his responsibility and marries er. Strauss (played by Stuart — Wilson), Barbara Ferris as the father’s mistress and Derek Jacobi as Lanner, the musician who had such an influence, professionally and personally, on the older Strauss’ life.
